 Tonight's test |
Look at this stellar speed. I am paying for the 7MB tier.
They keep blaming it on my router. (Linksys WRT54GL w/ Tomato)
Uh, I DON'T THINK SO! |

Take the router out of the mix, test again, and post the results. Also try a metrocast internal speed test. -- "So, Lone Starr, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb."

| This guy installed a custom firmware on his router. Hence, he has a clue what he is doing. Other than a few unusual circumstances, the only reason to connect direct to the modem is to appease the support reps. -- Where is that marketing manager when you need him? -GA |

| ^ Grunge, Ptrowski.....you both have good points, but I'd have to agree with Ptrowski - remove the router from the chain and post the results, just to be sure that has been done. I've had a a WRT54GS go bad on me, so it's a possibility.
I do think he probably has thought of that, though, but you never know. |

| reply to themonad Don't forget there was an other user here that was having issues and even said he had taken the router out of the loop. He forgot one BIG item he left in the loop his Vonage box! Until you get down to a modem and a computer how do you know it is not your router. Simple troubleshooting I think. |

| reply to themonad I am somewhat of an expert user. I have had various broadband offerings in the NE Mississippi area. I also have an extensive background in information technology.
I have a BRAND NEW Linksys WRT54GL router. My other one suspiciously died when Metrocast support told me they noticed I was running a Linksys router and the firmware was not current. Well, it was not Linksys firmware. The next morning, it was dead. Not kinda slow. DEAD. I tried every trick in the book short of shorting out the NVRAM to restore it. Hmmmm....Just what happens when you try to update firmware unsuccessfully. (You think they tried to help me out???) I just bought a new one.
The new router is running custom Tomato firmware. The previous was running DDWRT. If you are unfamiliar with these, you should check them out.
I have removed the router. I get the same problem. I have tried with different devices: laptop, PS3, Roku Player, etc. The results are the same. Speed one moment and the next is crap.
Did I mention that the signal for analog cable has interference? Did I mention that the digital signal for digital cable drops?
It is not my router.
Their technicians say that I just have to live with it. It is the best they can do. They say the signal to the house is great. They say the signal IN THE HOUSE is great.
The "ping test" was 100%. Um, that only indicates connectivity, not bandwidth. A freaking 1200baud modem can return an ICMP echo request at 100%.
One tech did tell me that the "main line at the road a couple of mile back was cut and they had patched it temporarily".
I think they should at a minimum ADMIT they have a problem. Not blame the customer. Look at all the posts here that are similar.

| reply to themonad I would hope not. It seemed VERY odd that the tech continued to point out that dated firmware could cause my problem. Even asked me to upgrade it. I told him to explain why the very same router provided a constant 6Mb connection with Comcast. He dropped it.
We did more testing. He said he would continue to test through the night and to leave everything powered up. The next morning it was dead.
I would hope the demarcation line would be the cable modem. Obviously, Metrocast did something to determine that I had a linksys router and the firmware was not what they wanted it to be. I am not saying this is a rampant practice, but I firmly believe a tech may have gotten over zealous.
Also, I mentioned MTU and another tech shat a porcupine! Said that is why I can't get the high speeds. Oh, really? Explain to me why I can get 5 or 6Mb during off peak.
While I finished my Master's in IT, I worked in tech support. It is not easy, but listening helps. It does not help to blame customers.
Can we agree, judging from the posts here, Metrocast in MS has issues?
I just want an acknowledgement instead of being scapegoated and belittled. Too much?

| Well, I have no idea what happened to the MS connection, but if you're a gamer, you're screwed.
We now have the 10/1 connection that you guys up north have, and there's so much lag in games now that they're unplayable. We're routed differently now than we were with our 9700/1450 connection, so I'm guessing that has something to do with it.
It's a night and day difference, and it started the same day the change took place. It's awful, and that was the only reason I had cable internet service to begin with. Such is the luck in Mississippi. |

1 edit | reply to lurchaddams lurchadams, The support techs when you call in are good for making notes to show you actually called them.
The guys here IMO are able to really get to the root of the problem although it may take a while.
I had an issue the beginning of the year that after some digging they were able to correct. Many kudos to the techs here as they do this on their own time.
