I've always thought of Skype as a bad implementation of a good idea. Having free Internet based voice is cool. It's been around since the 80's and dial up days, but at least now it is a little more modern, easier to use GUI, etc.
But there is a novelty to this, kind of like the magic jack, it's tethered to your PC. So as long as your computer has a solid QoS Internet connection you remain solid. I know of businesses that actually use Skype in this way, save a lot of money compared to the traditional telco. But with so many VoIP providers and the Telco companies finally figuring out that VoIP is where it's at, it's starting to fall more into a niche than utility use.
For someone who wants to talk to people across the world for cheap, it works great. But if you want to call Grandma down the road, your VoIP/Telco is going to win. Since a lot more calls are probably made to local areas than the other side of the planet, it's just a matter of cash flow. If Skype released a version that fixed all bugs and made the service flawless, that still won't fix a broken business plan. -- Fight NebuAD and the like: Click Here to pollute their data |
