 [Other] Speedtouch 516V6 Nightmare!!!

Hi, my problem started with a replacement modem I was sent from Primus, a Speedtouch 516v6. Prior I had a Speedtouch 516 with a Netgear 516 router, that had an Xbox Live and PS3 connected along with my computer. Now nothing works, I can't even access the web configuration utility because Internet Explorer will not display the page...but I can open all other pages. My LAN is now totally inaccessible through the modem, though I am able to surf the net. I get the "LAN has limited or no connectivity" message. If I connect the LAN to the Netgear router, I have LAN connectivity, but am unable to connect to the internet. I deleted my ISP software and reinstalled it, but that did nothing. We can't use the Xbox or PS3 online and must manually connect to the internet when the computer starts. I've been reading about ips & subnets & gateways, til my head is spinning and that seems to have just made everything even more confusing. I read that this modem is also a router but it's only a single connection, so how does one hook up other devices? And something about it has iv4 protocol but my computer's network is iv6, I don't understand that, either! There was No problem before that darn modem went and broke down. I don't know how well I've been able to explain this so you're able to understand...or if anybody's going to actually read this, but if you are...HELP!! And thank you very much in advance for at least trying & taking the time!
Sincerely, and with Kind Regards, Frustrated in Cambridge,Ont.

Your new Modem is also a Router. You mention that it has only one port and yet that is exactly how all Routers started out and they are easily used with multiple ethernet devices simply with the addition of a 10/100 Multi-port switch.

It sounds like you need to place your new Router into Bridge Mode so it acts like your old Modem that did not include a Router.

Thank you! Well, that doesn't seem too hard, that's exactly how it used to be...but for the barrier I'm having in reaching my modem's configuration to be able to change it to "bridge"...I would be able to use my Netgear router/hub if I can do that? I do recall(when I could access the modem's web-based utility for about 5 minutes before I screwed something up) there was an option for the bridge or ppp, and there were numbers for the VPN? Or something like that...I wasn't sure what I was supposed to set those on so I left them alone. I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and reset the modem back to it's factory defaults and start from scratch? I was going to try but I didn't want to completely lose my connection as this is where I'm "learning" how to fix it!! I deleted my ethernet and Windows(XP Home SP-3) would find it & it did, then it was appending a number when reinstalling it...I was up to LAN #4 when I used system restore and got it back to the original 1...but that did nothing other than, well, that. I'm getting something in my head that 192.168.0.1 was the ip assigned to my router but now that's what the modem's address is but because my LAN is still ruled by my router regardless of an internet connection--or not, that's where the conflict is coming in. Arrgghh! But thank you, at least I know the multi router/hub/switch part's possible...I just have to get into the modem to change it.

An interesting note; this is the third Speedtouch modem I've had...Sympatico had the Alcatel, Primus with the 2 Thomsons, the first 2 appear to have had the same power failure after about 3 years of use...Sympatico played around and tried to say they had to "test" my line when "testing" wouldn't have done anything, they knew it was the modem dying and that's when I ended up at Primus---at least they sent a replacement right away!

To reach the Speedtouch you would need to hook one PC directly to its single LAN port temporarily with no Broadband software running on the PC (no WAN Mini-port or PPPoE connection type software). Then reset the Speedtouch unit to defaults and make sure the PCs LAN connection is set to "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" under the TCP/IP Properties. You should then be able to type the IP address of the Speedtouch (either 10.0.0.138 or 192.168.1.254) in your Browser to access the built in Web Interface and then change it to Bridge Mode.

That should be like this describes:

Thanks ever so much Doctor, that's exactly what I did...right after I reset the modem to it's defaults by; holding down the reset until the power light went from green to red back to green, deleting and reinstalling the Primus software...and then I finally got the proper setup page, like you have pictured. Now, we're cooking with crisco! The PS3 works, the Xbox works and I don't have to hit the "connect to" every time I start the computer...what a relief! Your help and this site were invaluable...
Thanks again!
