Wow, Plano must need the money

Couldn't believe (still can't) what I was issued a traffic citation for today. I'm sitting at a red light and I made a right hand turn on red. Immediately pulled over (he must have been immediately behind me). Did I fail to to come to a complete stop? No, according to the officer. Turn signal was on, correct? Yes, it was. Turned into the outside lane so that's not the problem. What did I do wrong? I came to a complete stop all right but the nose of my compact car was extending out over the white line into an empty crosswalk. I then proceeded to go forward and make a legal right hand turn on red. Not the entire car, not half of a car, just the nose of the car. If one goes to Google maps or Google Earth and selects a random intersection with a crosswalk you can see the infraction at just about every intersection. Wow.... When I called to inquire as to the court costs (I've never had to take defensive driving before) the clerk commented "you're kidding" when told of the infraction.

I got pulled over for this about 5 years ago in a small town. I didn't get a ticket, just a verbal warning. Technically, the problem is not that "the nose of my car was extending out over the white line into an empty crosswalk", but instead that you did not stop in the appropriate place. There should be another line before the crosswalk which is the same line they paint at a stop sign even if there is no crosswalk. That is the line you are supposed to stop at. Then if you need to slowly inch forward to see the traffic, do so. However, if you do not stop at the line you have ran the stop (light, sign, whatever).

I do understand. Just as with the abusive Dallas PD officer several weeks ago I fail to see how this matter today served any beneficial purpose with regard to public safety (I would strongly agree that it would have been a totally different matter if I was up inside the line or encroaching upon the crosswalk). The line before the crosswalk proper is the one which was encroached upon allegedly, not the crosswalk itself which was further up. What I do see is how it will ultimately impact the city coffers. Oh well, what's done is done.

From my understanding, this is quite common in Plano.

I know they have a tough job to do and I respect that fully but to many times they get a slap on the wrist and the good ones end up forming the blue wall and defending the bad ones. I hate to say it but all cops seem to corrupt, I mean if the good ones back the bad ones aren't they all then corrupt.
