 | reply to mjmarket I will also recommend the 2701HG-B modem/router that AT&T ships out. My service would often get interrupted by lightning strikes in the area, even if they were quite a few miles away. Now I can have a raging thunderstorm on top of my head and the only thing that seems to knock my service out is a power failure. -- .sig |

1 edit | I figured that was the case. I was thinking about recommending a Westell 6100 modem to the OP but needed to ask him if there are many thunder and lightning storms in his area first. With him having a 18,000 foot long loop you just about could guarantee problems during thunder and lightning storms with the Westell 6100 modem.
The Westell 6100 modem was a great modem and would suck a DSL signal through mud. It was a very sensitive modem that would pull great DSL statistics on a crappy line, but that sensitivity was it's downfall during lightning storms.
My Westell 6100 modem will pull at least 3dB or more downstream SNR Margin than my Motorola 2210-02-1006 modem will. The OP's loop is 12 times longer than mine is. |

1 edit | reply to mjmarket With an 18,000 foot long loop and 63dB of DS Line Attenuation and 31dB of US Line Attenuation you are asking a lot from any modem.
Expecting your DSL to be up 24/7 without ever losing sync under those conditions might be asking too much.
.
First thing you need to do is make sure the inside wiring and devices are not causing problems with your DSL service.
Pull your DSL Statistics and logs the way your are connected now.
»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »How do I access the 2210 line stats and event logs? What do the numbers mean?
Connect your modem directly to the "Test Jack" inside your NID and leave it hooked up for about 30 minutes so the modem can settle down then pull the DSL Statistics and logs again.
»AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ »How do I isolate my house wiring from the Telco wiring?
Post the results up so we can have a look at them. The most important thing is to provide a screen capture of your modem's DSL Statistics page because the logs don't contain a lot of helpful information with this particular modem.
 Motorola 2210-02-1006 DSL Statistics Page.
This is the DSL Statistics page we need you to post.
The FAQ below has all the information that the two FAQs above do plus a lot more. The FAQ below my have too much information to take in all at once if you are new to troubleshooting DSL problems.

 | reply to Airwolf7 I don't remember with any degree of certainty how long my loop length is, and the tool here has been taken off-line. But, if memory serves me right, my loop length was somewhere in the 16,000 foot range.
Besides the lightning issue, I also wanted to simplify my hardware setup by getting down to one device. That is, as opposed to the Westell 6100 and a third-party router to serve the networking needs of my household. Gone are the days when I had to circumvent the router in order to troubleshoot the issues du jour. -- .sig |

mjmarket join:2009-04-13 Peachtree City, GA | reply to mjmarket The ATT dsl tech who was American said modem would not matter. What I need to do is to drop down from Ultra (1.5mb) to Lite (786 Kb) because of the distance 1.5 is loud 786 would be up longer. What do you think |

| It would be much easier for you to just downgrade from FastAccess DSL Ultra to FastAccess DSL Lite.
It would save you the effort of actually troubleshooting your problems and it would save us the effort of actually trying to help you. It would be the easiest solution all the way around unless you also have troubles running FastAccess DSL Lite. If you have troubles with FastAccess DSL Lite after you downgrade then you can come back here and ask us more questions and we can provide you with more information that you can ignore.
Good Luck! -- It is not possible to achieve 'equality' between things that are, fundamentally, not equal! |

CarlPremium join:2004-07-21 Krotz Springs, LA | reply to mjmarket Try the 2Wire. You can disable the wireless. I get near 3.0 speeds on the 2Wire and my loop is pretty screwed up. A great person helped me get my modem reliable. I now sync at anywhere from 3200 to 3400 Kbps down and 448 Kbps up (I can do 512 but then my downstream suffers) and now these are the speeds I ALWAYS get. NO other modem gets me these speeds.
