While I don't always get blazing speeds while moving, I periodically run the iPhone speed test application created by this site and it's fairly common to get around 1Mbps/down and a couple hundred Kbps up. Sometimes it's 1.5Mbps down and 300Kbps up. Of course, sometimes it's only a few hundred Kbps down and 100Kbps up but that's usually inside a building where there are only a couple bars.
Are my expectations low? Should I be getting multi-megabits/second down and equally faster up speeds?
When I run the same benchmark on my home's WiFi (Charter cable), the iPhone attains speeds of close to the rated 5Mbps down and 512Kbps up. I know the phone is capable of much higher speeds. I don't know if this is true but somewhere I read the iPhone's 3G speeds are throttled to enhance battery life. I think someone claimed that if they opened it up, it would eat batteries even more than it does now. Is there truth to this?
Regarding Slingbox, there's already things like YouTube and iTV and so forth. Is the expectation that SlingBox will use that much more bandwidth or simply that more people will use it than YouTube or the other video services? I know what SlingBox is and it's a fantastic idea. I don't have one but that's because I don't travel that much and when I have time to watch videos, I usually find myself at home where I don't need to sling the video. |
