Car Analogy

If they were going for car analogies..

Well I would want a Chevy truck over a pinto car. That pinto car may get the job done, but it can't do any heavy lifting like the chevy could, can, and will do.
Fibers all about expanding capabilities...at least that's what I take it as.

Is fiber really needed for the pathetic speeds that FiOS and U-Verse give today?

The answer is no. These can be done over coax.

Fiber is not about speed as much as it is about capacity.

Bbbbbut your cable provider isn't even matching those "patheric" speeds!

How about a Bugatti Veyron vs a Tata Nano as a comparison?

Bugatti Veyron

Bugatti Veyron

0-60 in 2.8 secs
Top speed 253 MPH
$1,500,000

Tata Nano

Tata Nano

0-60 in 17 secs
Top speed 70 MPH
$2,500

Forgive me I am a bit slow..

What exactly are you saying?

Fibers expensive, but a tata nano is cheap and can still get the job done?

And that Tata would be disintegrated on Highway 27 in all of one day of being on that road.

What use is capacity if it isn't used?

I get 30 meg down, 2 up. More than enough for my needs, and more download than 20/5 FiOS.

How about a 2009 Ford F-350 Super Duty 350-hp twin-turbo 6.4 liter V8 Powerstroke diesel with 650 lb.-ft. of torque over that Pinto.

1. I can get 30 mbit download with PowerBoost over my current cable connection. Which is DOCSIS 1.1. Granted, that doesn't happen 80% of the time but it's possible.
2. Above about 15 Mbps per second, I'd much rather have increased upload than download. I'll take 15/5 over 30/2 any day of the week. If a file I need is *that big* and I need it *that quickly* I'll probably have to do some major editing/uploaidng of said file soon after.

Oh, and how much are you paying for your 30/2 connection? Almost forgot to ask that. FiOS is $60/month for 20/5, $70/month for 20/20. Guess what I'd take on 100/10 vs. 20/20? You guessed it, 20/20. Unfortunately 99.9% of servers out there are on 100 Mbit connections so getting 2.5 MB/s downloads and uploads is going to make my day a lot better than downstream speeds I'll have a hard time saturating due to "the other end".

Again, I'll maintain that after about 15 Mbps per second, today's applications don't see a discernable performance improvement in 99.9% of cases. However this 15 Mbps applies for both download and upload speeds. Guess which one HFC has so far been unable to do in more than a halfhearted manner?

AT&T says the same thing about FiOS.

Maybe in the UK cable isnt the same class of threat, but im pretty sure cable is why Verizon went with Fiber Optics here in the US. because they know that faster Docsis2 was there and that D3 was coming and that Twisted pair copper was deadend. and that since Cable has FTTN already, FTTH isnt much more of a push so they had to also beat cable to that punch.

That may be true but Verizon didn't own a coax infrastructure when they started to roll out FiOS. Are you suggesting that Verizon and AT&T should have built out their own hybrid fiber coax (or at least cat 5e) infrastructure to homes?

You really do adore cable, don't you sir?

Isn't your cable usage capped, and how often does it actually reach 30Mbit?

Please...the most DOCSIS 3 can offer, from what I understand, is around 100 mbps. Look at how quickly we jumped from being satisifed with 3-5 mbps to suddenly only being satisfied if we receive greater than 10 mbps at the very least.

How long do you think before people start demanding something more than 50 mbps offered by cablecos and Verizon right now (and maybe AT&T in the future if they perfect pair bonding)? 100 mbps will become the standard soon enough. Probably within the next 10-15 years. Then what do the cablecos do? Develop DOCSIS 4?

And if the speeds offered by FiOS (its not really fair to lump FiOS and Uverse together since Uverse isnt pure fiber) are pathetic, why dont you say the speeds offered by coax are pathetic as well? As of right now, the cablecos are matching Verizon for 50 mbps down. It's the same thing. Except at any time Verizon can up their down speeds dramatically and blow the cablecos out of the water.

Fiber is the superior medium. No matter what you say about coax, fiber will always win.
