 | Bell Speedstream 4200 unlock/flash questions Hi everyone:
I have here a Speedstream 4200 from Bell. I have read through (quite) a few of the unlocking and flashing instructions, and I'm not sure which is the best way for me to go. I see a lot of clear info. on unlocking the 5200 but not so much the 4200. Please forgive me if my searches missed it.
First of all, I'm confused when trying to identify which modem I have. THE MODEM LABEL reads: "Part number: 060-D242-A58" "IC: 267AJ-D242A58".
However, in the web interface, it reads: "Config Part. No 003-y093-G05" "004-D240-A3S".
Does this mean I have a D240 or D242?
I would like to config. the modem so that all menus possible will show, and I would like to access said menus without having to resort to having an html links sheet available. Do I need to flash, or can the all this be done simply by unlocking?
I am quite comfortable with either, though I could use instructions.
Thanks very much in advance

1 edit | reply to hogwild Thanks for that-it worked. Just what the "Dr." ordered.
A couple of follow-up questions. Will this config. stick after a factory defaults reset? I'm guessing not...
Second, Can Bell upgrade the firmware now? I've called, and was told they no longer try to update 4200 modems online, but I just assumed they could be wrong/lying and that it was automated and could still happen.
Anyone know?

Second Answer, I Don't Know. However, you can simply disable that ability (that stops them dead) by stopping the CWMP agent.

Note: Don't know what document that you have, but I do know there are two 4200 designs (early revision D240 and later revision D242) and each uses a different Firmware that isn't swappable between versions.
Sympatico updated one of their 4200s at least 3 times with the CWMP agent and that shows there were different Bell Canada/Sympatico specific 4200 Firmwares at one time. -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

Okay, a couple of questions.
1. I assumed that when the author who wrote the text in the post on Keyboard Ninjas wrote:
"Now when you access this link you will be able to change ALL your settings on your modem."
I assumed that meant that all the menus (or at Menu Headings or categories) would display in the left window pane of the web interface, without my having to create html files or similar with links to pages other than what was being displayed. After the procedure, it displays:
Home User Pages Status and Statistics Tools
(and all their nested menus)
Is that the typical result? I CAN get into the other pages described by using the HTML links outside the modem in html files), on this site etc. I was just hoping for the former situation.
2. I cannot telnet into the modem, as suggested. When I try, I get error: "C:\WINDOWS>telnet 192.168.2.1 Connecting To 192.168.2.1...Could not open connection to the host, on port 23: Connect failed"
Do I need to enable something in the modem, or ??
Thanks once more!

 | Doctor Olds is some notorious resource on the SpeedStream around here. He's most likely the best user to ask questions about this product but i can tell you the address i TelNet to is 192.168.254.254 (using the genuine FirmWare/setup)... |

Not all pages will show up, but roughly 80% will become visible. You just have to direct access the other pages if you need them by pasting the link in your browser or saving them as bookmarks.

You are certain it will work on my firmware on a 4200? I did some searching, but didn't see any indication of whether or not that's the case.

Doesn't that utility simply allow for setting a temporary user/password to access telnet or ftp? The port has to be open in the firmware regardless, as far as I can remember. -- GOLF LEAFS GOLF! |

1 edit | Interestingly enough, the 5200FTP utility did not seem to work. Even though it confirmed changing of the pwd. to the one I specified, when I tried logging in via Telnet using that password immediately afterwards, I was simply prompted again for another username and pwd. I tried several times.
Anyone have any suggestions?
