Re: Help/Advice with my Line Statistics please

connection has since returned back to normal after the Bell van drove away.

I went for a walk to get some groceries and did notice the same van driving around the neighboorhood. He was a few streets down and it looked like he was filling out some paperwork... I didn't want to bother him because he was obviously busy but Bell was definitely doing work in my area today.

I'm trying a TP-Link 8841. It was $34.99 at Premier Computer Canada and I'm happy to say that I'm actually quite impressed by this model so far. I actually got it for $24.99 but only because I have shopped at that store for years and was able to use some store reward points.

It supports ADSL2+ Annex M and provides a good amount of line statistics considering the very low price of the unit.

More importantly, for my very marginal line, it is able to keep up in attainable rate to the attainable rate on my Speedstream 5200 (RE-ADSL version). When I tried a Thomson ST516v6, I was not happy at all with it as it performed poorly on my line (would not even connect without tweaking at 2496 Kbps). I was told that I was at 87% occupancy when I last spoke to my ISP when I was connecting using the Speedstream 5200. On the TP-Link 8841, I am also at about 87-88% at the moment but the user interface is much better (in my opinion) to the crippled Bell firmware on the Speedstream modem.

Here's some nice information that my TP-8841 modem can provide. I'll see if I can find a program to do a screen capture, but in the meanwhile:
Statistics -- ADSL

This TP-Link model also has a nice error diagnostic tool
"ADSL BER Test - Start

The ADSL Bit Error Rate (BER) test determines the quality of the ADSL connection. The test is done by transferring idle cells containing a known pattern and comparing the received data with this known pattern to check for any errors."

Hello again Bicephale

Look at what I found inside the TD-8841's brower interface:

"ADSL Tone Settings" for both upstream and downstream

Is this TP-Link and the D-Link 2320B basically the same modem? The tone selection page looks suspiciously almost identical to that in the D-Link 2320B message thread. The guy at Premier Computer Canada actually adviced me to take the TP-Link over the D-Link even though it meant they were selling a product that was half the price.

other features available:
-dsl type selction (g.dmt, g.lite, adsl2, annexL, ADSL2+, AnnexM)
-bitswapping
-SRA
-test mode (normal, reverb, medley, no retrain, l3)

I'll have to do some research and experimenting to see what all this stuff does.

Lots of nice "toys" on the TD-8841 with a very low price.

Here's some screenshots. I'll have to play around with the settings to try to get the most out of my connection. If you are in Toronto and want to buy this modem from the same store because of how it is able to show your maximum possible speed, I think that I might have taken the last one in stock so give them a call first.

Hi,

Excellent! I've often tried to obtain some of
those captures and always failed so far. I'm
thinking the resemblance is no coincidence,
i'd suggest you explore its TelNet server:

TelNet://192.168.1.1/

I believe 'DMT', 'OrbMt' and 'RouterStats' will
all work. As for Spectral Shaping, it's a bonus
and i've been dreaming about something such
as this for years, including more recently:

interesting... at first I thought that turning on Annex M and SRA degraded my connection but I tried again and my maximum speed went up! I'll say this about this modem... It is inconsistent for me with connection speeds. It sometimes requires a reboot/resync to achieve the maximum but for the price I got it for I'm not complaining.... *dreaming of a possible 3008/800*... take a look at my stats now after changing a few settings and compare it to the screenshot from before. PS: Screen Hunter used for screen capturing (just try to remember to uncheck the useless toolbar that it will try to install that is probably adware).

Yes, i find that puzzling as SRA isn't available under
the ADSL v1 protocol, if i'm not mistaking!... I don't
use special SoftWare to get screen captures under
the Windows environment, by the way, but i guess
you're already aware that [Ctrl]+[PrnScr] & MSPaint
should work fine, right?... Anyway, i'd proceed with
Spectral Shaping right away!

just like with the ST516, I find that this modem will not connect at more than about 90.6% occupancy. For example right now, it is connected at 2464 out of 2720 Kbps. Are these programs forgetting to take into account the interleaving on my line?

Incorrect setttings can really screw your line up while using this modem. It's a good thing that there's a factory reset.

Oh... Did you try to get something like
*/512 Kbps as i suggested previously?:

»Re: Help/Advice with my Line Statistics please

Maybe even as low as 384 Kbps (US)?

Velcom just claims that they have no control of the profile that Bell sets. Every time Bell gets a ticket, they seem to just see a ticket that says "slow speed" and they set the profile to whatever they feel like or what they feel will work - either that or they tell me someone will be dispatched to do recabling and they never actually do it. (one minute they tell me I have a defective modem, the next minute they are doing recabling at the CO, and the next day they tell me that there is a voltage cross on the drop, etc.)

No, i mean from your end using Spectral Shaping!

VelCom doesn't need to know and much less Bell,
at least at the moment...

ok, sorry I misread what you had typed.

I'm still trying to figure out how to use everything on this modem. not really sure where to start. I'll have to keep adjusting the tone settings and do some reading of the other threads.

I must be just on the verge of 3M because I did absolutely nothing except turn off the modem for a few minutes and started up again and now my attainable is listed as 3232 Kbps. Maybe the DSLAM doesn't like how I keep changing modems/disconnecting/rebooting (and leaving the modem off for a few minutes made everything on the remote end reset as well)??? - not sure how that really works...

Hummm...

I did try to gather some input on Spectral Shaping
from pkarlos_76 who had a similar NetComm clone
last year but that thread stopped there:

DMT Tool for D-LINK DSL 2320B, Bicephale, 2008-Feb-17

He's still active on this site but he posts in a few
other forums like Shaw, you can try sending him a
note just in case he has a contribution to make...

ok, thank you

It sounds like I'll just have to do some trial and error. Hopefully, Bell doesn't see all these different sync rates or they might autmoatically lower the profile.

disabled tones 18-31
synced at 2496/384 ds snr up by about 1.0 dB compared to when all tones where enabled.
ds max 2912
us max 500

trial #4
diabled tones 19-31
synced at 2496/416
ds max 2912
us max 544

I know these numbers look like a big mess now and I know the next step will be to make a chart or spreadsheet but I'm just recording the results as they happen so that it is documented somehwere.

TP-Link TD-8841 (Statistics - ADSL)
While i think of it...

Would you please verify that this is the actual
URL leading to the numbers illustrated above?:

Statistics - ADSL

Relatively to the UpStream bins to be cut, i'd
begin with tones 16 to 31 (or so), effectively.

Perhaps 'OrbMt' could be made useful here by
showing eventual Spectral Response changes
as you tweak...

yes, that is exactly what the tp-link configuration page looks like. That was a screen shot from my own computer.
