Re: Siemens SpeedStream 4200 FirmWare UpGrades

OK. Now I see the confusion. Using a Hex Editor to read a file without changing it is not "hacking", but I can understand now why you misunderstood about versions and that you may be uneasy about reading with a Hex Editor if you never have before though it is just like reading a text file in Notepad with other characters (binary) mixed inside it, but there is still readable English plain text inside the file. I have no problems with you or your posts and I wasn't upset with you, my apologizes if it came across that way.

That list you found for the 5200 was from my reading the contents of the Firmware file using a Hex Editor on the file from inside each Updater (you have to run the Updater to get that, but you stop and don't click the Update/Upgrade button at the next step and instead click Cancel so that no changes occur to the Modem. All I was saying is that list doesn't mean any number combination will be tied to or linked with any certain type or ISP version of a Firmware. That's all. A7S could be Bell in the 5200, but A7S in the 4200 is Full Router.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

The list you read was Abusor.org copying from my Forum post - which is nothing that you did and I didn't blame you, I'm trying to help you instead and it seems were are on different pages.

Anyway, Good Luck with whatever you decide. Back up your old original firmware first before you flash update it as that will overwrite it and lose it if you don't take care of copying it first on your own. There are steps in a guide that is posted in the Bell Canada/Old Sympatico Forum for the 5200 that work with the 4200 also.

Doctor Olds

...and right before that you wrote:

You have to look inside each with a Hex Editor and
I prefer to use the "Full Router GA configuration"
versions as they are Uncrippled/Retail. The others
are made for specific ISPs.
...so i just picked the option which seemed more appropriate
as i don't feel like "hacking" or dealing with branded stuff...

This is leading to some misunderstanding which may never
resolve, i give up.

You posted.....

quote:
It should be safer to go with "Full Router GA configuration" but i
didn't find any FirmWare named 'Update_D240_A0?_*.exe' so far.
Which seemed very strange after I had posted you needed to look inside the files with a Hex Editor as externally you could not tell what ISP the files were for or if a Firmware were a Retail release (very rare with Efficient/Siemens).

The short story is that www.abusar.org popped up during a
Google search yesterday and your post only late tonight,
nothing strange. You sound like i wanted to infer unfair
conclusions or something, sorry for asking.

It is just strange to see you reference a post that I made a good while back that has the Firmware config types listed that I extracted using a Hex Editor and then posted to the Forum. You seemed to use it as it were a guide on how to decode the numbers when it was not. I wish there was a pattern, but there isn't so I don't follow how you came up with that in your post at all.

Even stranger is how the »www.abusar.org site copies 90% of the content from the Efficient Forum without crediting the original authors.

Anyway. Enjoy!

"A8M" is Australian ISP Firmware and some of their Firmwares block ports for VoIP and P2P.

Sorry if i seem to be making up patterns which ain't there!

I guess i'll only consider using the late 'A8M' file when the
case becomes urgent: i don't want this to be so involving
and i own five other MoDems, after all...

That is unrelated 5200 info.

A Full Firmware can be any series of numbers/letters as your 4200 shows.

You seem to be making up a pattern that is not there as I sure did not make a suggestion that one exists and that is exactly why I posted that you must read inside the Firmware files with a Hex Editor in order to find out exactly what they are inside. The external numbering system does not tell you anything about the Firmware other than which file is newer Alpha-Numerically.

Where are you coming up with that?

You have D240-A7S Firmware installed according to your posted info and it shows as "Full Router GA configuration" so I don't see any "0" there, I see "7".

Hi,

The "0" in "A0?" stands for "Full Router GA configuration"
or maybe kust "Full Router", which is the prefered setup,
doesn't it?...

Why would you go backwards from your posted current installed version of "D240_A7* firmware down "D240_A0* ??

I'll keep looking...

You go by the Firmware number. That is also how you can tell if a Firmware will flash on your Modem or not.

  Hi everyone,
Hi Doctor Olds (i hope!),

This is a non-branded (genuine) MoDem/Router i bought:

(From 'DMT v9.01' capture)

(From back label on split-shell casing)

I'd like to know what updates are available for this unit.

The version thing has got me confused, as you can see:

»Efficient/Siemens SpeedStream 4200 3rd-Party Utilities

Well, i mean i'm no longer sure which one i have exactly:
is it a "D242" as i thought it was or a "D240" instead!?...
