| speed discrepancy
I have AT&T Elite DSL, rated at 6 Mbps. I am only getting about 2.5 Mbps as measured by the AT&T Speed Test and also speakeasy.net Speed Test. The AT&T technician came out and measured the line with his meter just at the point where it connects with my modem -- it said 6 Mbps ... I saw the reading on his instrument myself. Still, when I connect the line directly to my DSL modem, the Speed Tests listed above still show 2.5 Mbps. I have tried two different modems, Speedstream 5100B and the modem currently for sale on the At&t website from Motorola (2210-02-1002K). I have tried two different computers, a Pentium IV and a new quad core. Still the same outcome. I have tried connecting the known 6 Mbps line directly to the modem as mentioned and also conntecting the line to the modem through a DSL filter. What should I be thinking about now? What kinds of questions should I be asking of myself and/or AT&T? |

| Have you gone into the modem access page to see exactly what speed you are synced at? For example the motorola modem access page is 192.168.1.254 Go to this page for the motorola modem and it will tell you your line stats and modem connect speed and all kind of data. I also have the elite package. It should say on that page it is connected at 6016 kbps down and 768 up. With this package after overhead you should see around 5.15mb download speed. Hope this helps. |

1 edit | reply to jgsparks Sounds like the classic problem where the DSLAM ADSL configuration is upgraded, but the Redback profile isn't.
This FAQ talks about the 1.5->3.0 upgrade, but it also happens for 3.0->6.0 upgrades. »Ameritech - SBC FAQ »I upgraded to a faster speed plan but only my upload speed increased...
Post in the AT&T Direct forum »/forum/sbcdirect. Use a topic like "Elite DSLAM upgrade good, Redback profile stuck at Pro."
I'm assuming you don't have a router with QoS set for Pro speeds... do you? |

| Thanks for your answers. I checked the modem (I have the Speedstream 5100B in now) as per suggested. The result is : Connected at 6016 Kbps (downstream); 768 Kbps (upstream). Yet still the Speed Test consistently shows ca. 2.5 Mhz. Is this condition, then, consistent with the possibility that the Elite DSLAM upgrade is good and the Redback profile stuck? (I am pretty new at this and will have to study up what that actually means.) I have a router but it is now out of the system ... the DSL line goes directly to the modem and the ethernet cable goes directly from the modem to the computer. |

What's that description above mean? Read the FAQ: »Ameritech - SBC FAQ »I upgraded to a faster speed plan but only my upload speed increased...
