jefePremium join:2001-05-19 Northport, NY | Two A/P's in house...same or different channels? For some time I've been using a Netgear powerline WAP to provide good coverage at the end of our house opposite from my home office. I've always used a separate router and wifi A/P.
I just switched from cable to FiOS. The Verizon provided Actiontec router has wifi built in. I'm thinking that as long as I have the new wifi router, maybe I'll use it as well as my original setup. I'd like to have both a/p's on the same SSID and using the same WPA password. My question is should I have each on a different channel, or both on the same channel?
My original setup is on channel 11. For starters I tried setting the new router to channel 1. That works fine for my laptop, but my Blackberry doesn't seem to see the channel 1 a/p.
Can I run both a/p's on channel 11 without causing a zone of confusion in the middle of the house?

1 edit | yes, you can put both on the same channel. If you have PCs simultaneously using both due to where they are, it's best to put them on different channels, choosing among channel #1, 6 or 11. If you have a neighbor who has very heavy traffic on his WiFi that enters your house, avoid getting within 3 channels if that one.
Your client PCs should, but many don't, choose the strongest signal on your SSID. Some client software allows you to choose the access point you want, but this isn't standard in windows default software. |

I'm going to try running both on the same channel and see if I run in to any problems. I'll report back how it goes.

edit: Update....I've got both a/p's on channel 11 now. My Blackberry Bold seems to like it and laptops haven't had any problem yet. |
