What seems dumb about this to me, is even though we haven't been given a cut off date, many of us CV users are already looking at our options to leave. Based on user reports here, I'm considering VoicePulse. If I end up happy with them, I'll have little motivation to move to AT&T's new BYOB service whenever they launch it. AT&T should have had their new service ready to go before telling us they were killing CV, I might have been willing to at least consider their new offering. Now, they'll just lose another customer.

I'm sorry to see CallVantage go too. I've signed up for PhonePower based on my experiences with Ari and Jim who ran DSLExtreme.

U-verse voice is available to me (finally) but I don't see good reason to pay more for less service. With all of this capping nonsense going on I want to make sure my ISP is easily changed. I've also read way too many reports of issues with caller ID and voice quality issues. At least with Time Warner VOIP, the line was better than POTS quality (could even maintain reliable 56k modem connections) which helped justify the additional cost. Hopefully AT&T will sort those problems out.

Firepower of this fully armed and operational Battle Station...

This is a bad business idea, IMHO. AT&T is thinking of the future already: The future where they have VERY LOW caps and MEGA HIGH overage charges to protect their monopoly type services.

They think by shutting down CV they will force users into more expensive, AT&T plans.... but at this stage, it's jumping the gun, because they are *actually* getting people to leave for competitor's third party VOIP, and that's a bad business move!

But they have plans, oh yes. The Deathstar is under construction. They figure soon will come a time when low gigabyte caps and high overage charges will mean third party VOIP will not be nearly as attractive.... and even if you stay with a third party, AT&T can still make bank by charging you metered billing for the bandwidth.

Problem is, they moved early. The battle station isn't quite operational just yet.

I know U-Verse user who has had Vonage for a couple of years. Very happy with both. He is also in a mega metro area like Chicago. My experience is the opposite. Vonage does not work well in rural areas, period. AT&T has the most stable BB connection in rural areas - and the best. I don't like Bell. I haven't liked Bell since it was allowed to reinvent itself into the giant it was before the bust up, but, you can't beat the fact they do it better than anyone else because they own the long distance lines and control the last mile.

voicepulse.com is good. However have you looked at your actual outgoing usage and calcuklated what it would cost to go per minute? You could go with the PBX in a flash offer that is still ongoing for $4 a month (total .. there are no taxes) and then pay pennies per minute. Incomming is free.

I do not work for them. Sorry about the huge pic. I have multiple providers. I am not a salesperson of this product.

Yeah but now you are comparing apples to oranges. The original thread is about AT&T Call Vantage which is residential PBX is business class. Most residential customers use at least 500 outgoing minutes a month and I use 1,500-2k on average. So that is not a deal for the average residential user. People reading this thread are not going to be interested in a PBX system? They just want to pay a cheap monthly rate between 10-30.00 a month and have a phone that works with a unlimited minutes.

I do not quite understand you. You put your sip credntials in a PBX or an ATA. what does it matter?

You have to understand, todays ATT is really being run by the former SBC crowd.

And their managers are just dumb, dumb, dumb.

Where do I start... First you are not going to get the hand holding or tech support of a company like PhonePower. Second, you don't get nowhere near the feature set. PhonePower gives you up to 3k minutes a month and Voice Pulse is truly unlimited so for for an average family it is a much better deal! Also PhonePower gives you a free ATA as long as you are with them that is plug & play. Again we are talking about CallVantage which is a residential service and the consequences. If this thread was about a business PBX provider like Packet 8 who offers both then it would make more sense to compare?

I don't see how they are trying to force more customers imto buying more expensive services since U-Verse is only available in a few states. They also stated that there will be another notification and a bout 8 weeks later the service will end.

My impression after talking to them was that they don't really have any intentions of keeping the CV customers outside of their areas of coverage.

So far for me, Optimum Voice is the best and lest expensive option.
