Re: Netgear ReadyNAS Duo overheating

Yes, the temp range applies to the NAS itself, but, if the unit is rated for 95 degrees F, it should have been able to handle 80 degrees just fine if the cooling fan is working OK and ventilation hasn't been restricted.

Well, for now, I put a case fan right in front of the enclosure, it seems to be doing a good job, then again the weather cooled off in San Diego too, so the room temperature is much cooler as well.

Netgear rates the product for an ambient temperature range of 0 - 95 degrees F, so it should be able to handle 80 degrees, if everything is working OK.
The temp rating probably applies to the device and not the drives which are essentially the issue (drives overheating not the nas). Short of swapping the drives (some run cooler than others) all that can be done is alter the environment.

An ambient temp of 80 is fairly high for a small box like that with two drives in it. If you can't keep it in an air conditioned area then try to keep it low to the ground, out of sunlight and with plenty of air space around it. If it comes to it you could probably attach a fan to the front blowing air through or get one of those $10 turbo fans from walmart and place that in front of it.

The primary and secondary drives in my Netgear ReadyNAS Duo are having overheating problems. A few weeks ago, I opened the box up and cleaned everything real good, blew all the dust OUT, wiped down the grille and all the other parts where air normally would flow through. I thought that resolved the problem, until yesterday, we had record high heat of 93 in San Diego, and it was probably about 80 in the house when the drives hit their set limit to throw a warning email to me.

Disk on channel 1 reports a temperature of 57C / 134F.
Disk on channel 2 reports a temperature of 56C / 132F.

Please shutdown the system immediately for service.

I'm not sure what else to do, should I try replacing the fan? Wouldn't I get one of those alert emails if the fan was not working properly? I've tried updating the firmware to the latest one from Netgear, but this did not have any effect on the problem.
