Thanks. I've been using it all this time tonight so far with no lockups. I'll look at that board and reboot and see how the POST goes again.

EDIT:

Just to let everyone know:

Ever since repartitioning the boot partitions (left a storage partition alone), reformatting, and reinstalling OSs my system is acting normal, including POSTing now. I must have gotten a virus that Nortons didn't stop or detect during check.

How a virus could affect the POST is beyond me, but...

Maybe this asus p5q-e.

It's 8 phase has esata and firewire connectors and dual lan.

"last 7 POSTs have gone fine."

I'll keep a good thought for you.

Yeah, I won't push it to the edge, not something I think would be wise to do in my case anyways.

The board has 2 ethernet, comes with eSATA adapters, firewire, and more, those are things I want. I am totally open to ideas.

BTW, I just possibly might have figured out/solved my current system's problem: Some sort of Virus that Norton's didn't catch and remove, I don't know how that could affect POSTing, but the last 7 POSTs have gone fine. I've repartitioned and reinstalled the OS and I am running AVG right now.

"Also, I want a quad core rather than a dual core"

I was discussing all the cpus, the q8300 q8400 etc. that you and ray linked to above. not any dual cores.

"but how many phase does it have?"

As a rough estimate you can generally count the chokes around the cpu socket. In this case they are square black ferrite chokes around the socket in this picture.

You can see there are 12.
I say rough estimate because sometimes a choke around the socket is for memory or such.
In gigabyte's case they have what they call quad triple phase which doesn't seem to be what we would think of as 12 phase. If we took the cooler off I think one would only find 12 mosfets for the cpu power, which indicates something more like a 6 phase design. I'm not an engineer so I can't make a sure pronouncement on it but there must be a reason why they call it "virtual 12" quad triple rather than just 12 phase.

Still it's a good board. Are you sure that you really need such an expensive board. I feel compelled to talk you down a bit because it seems excessive for your budget.

Since you run folding and boinc, for the sake of stability and accuracy of results, I wouldn't try to push overclocks to the edge.

This is the board:

Also, I want a quad core rather than a dual core for folding and BOINC, among other reasons.

I am wondering when i5 will come out and how it will compare to the latest core 2 processors?

": How about this board"

I don't see a link for your last question.

I think the reason why the 8400 is cheaper than the 8300 is the 8400 was released recently to counter amd's phenom releases.

The 8400, unlike the 9xxx does not have virtualization support.

The other main difference is that the 83/8400 9400 and 9550 all have different cache sizes. Beyond these two differences and the clock speeds I don't think there is much else going on.

I don't pay a lot of attention to overclocking but the 8300 is a 7.5 multiplier, the 8400 and 9400 are 8, the 9550 is 8.5. You won't need to drive the fsb as high with the higher multipliers. Unless you are really pushing them to the limit, which I don't recommend with your budget, I don't think there is going to be a big difference. I would stick to a modest overclock. You get diminishing returns anyway.

Whether the extra cache makes much difference is difficult to predict. I wouldn't punish your budget by trying to squeeze out every ounce of additional performance you can get.

Oh! OK, I'll save up for the additional 6mb cache!

What about a gigabyte/MSI/ASUS board with dual Lan?

EDIT: How about this board, looks like it has good cooling, but how many phase does it have? More than I was planning on, but if I can limp on with my current system for another several months...

Ok, but that 50 buck difference between Q9400 and Q9550 represents the difference between 6 and 12mb cache.

I don't think I will be able to afford that expensive a processor. The check coming is only $250 and I might be able to scare up another 200, I don't know...

I am supposed to get a stimulous check. If I do and I buy an Intel Quad Core, what is the difference between these three processors and what advantages are there, including overclocking?:

Next, I see that there are a ton of different Gigabyte boards for these processors. How can I tell what is different as far as the power circuitry on them?

Which Gigabyte boards would be good or best? What MSI and ASUS boards would be good or best? Why?

My current socket 939 system is acting up but limping along for now. It may take me a few months to gather the money EVEN WITH THE stimulous check...
