Re: System is dieing, need to build new system, questions

Ok, but that 50 buck difference between Q9400 and Q9550 represents the difference between 6 and 12mb cache.

Oh! OK, I'll save up for the additional 6mb cache!

What about a gigabyte/MSI/ASUS board with dual Lan?

EDIT: How about this board, looks like it has good cooling, but how many phase does it have? More than I was planning on, but if I can limp on with my current system for another several months...

": How about this board"

I don't see a link for your last question.

I think the reason why the 8400 is cheaper than the 8300 is the 8400 was released recently to counter amd's phenom releases.

The 8400, unlike the 9xxx does not have virtualization support.

The other main difference is that the 83/8400 9400 and 9550 all have different cache sizes. Beyond these two differences and the clock speeds I don't think there is much else going on.

I don't pay a lot of attention to overclocking but the 8300 is a 7.5 multiplier, the 8400 and 9400 are 8, the 9550 is 8.5. You won't need to drive the fsb as high with the higher multipliers. Unless you are really pushing them to the limit, which I don't recommend with your budget, I don't think there is going to be a big difference. I would stick to a modest overclock. You get diminishing returns anyway.

Whether the extra cache makes much difference is difficult to predict. I wouldn't punish your budget by trying to squeeze out every ounce of additional performance you can get.

This is the board:

Also, I want a quad core rather than a dual core for folding and BOINC, among other reasons.

I am wondering when i5 will come out and how it will compare to the latest core 2 processors?
