| FiOS passes plenty of homes with potential customers that have not taken the plunge. Surely just about any person that is looking for internet only solutions from Verizon, and has the available service, has already signed up. This is an attempt to grab as many customers as possible that are looking for a cheap solution that meets all their needs.
With no caps and rock solid stability, if you were to opt for a standalone FiOS internet service, either the 20/5 or 20/20 (soon to be 25/25 for both) are already offered at a great price and allow outstanding potential for any alternative video and VoIP solutions. |

| Believe it or not, ping times with FiOS were inferior to Comcast for me. The only reason I got rid of Comcast was because they would not tell me what their caps were, and I considered it unethical.
FiOS, I think, is overrated. The customer service is excellent, which is why I'll keep using it. Though the bandwidth is equivalent to Comcast, they do not have a PowerBoost system and the ping times are worse than Comcast's.
If I hadn't been turned away by Comcast and locked in a deal with Verizon, I might have actually switched back. |

1 edit | I currently pay $89.95 for 50/20 FiOS service with Verizon. Latency is largely dependent on the servers you connect to most often. For me, the latency is improved significantly in general testing done within the US and abroad. I, especially, see better performance to Europe and Asia, by a considerable margin.
The other day I sent nearly 20GB of data to a location in Holland that would have taken me all day to do with my Comcast connection. For me, the Comcast PowerBoost only works with the first 10MB's of uploaded data, according to their current information. That just won't cut it, and I won't think of going back until they offer a substantial increase in the upload performance, and for a comparable price.
For those people primarily interested in downloading, especially files under 40MB's, perhaps Comcast is the better option? Although, rumor has it that FiOS will be upgrading 20/5 service to 25/25 by late June and into July of this year. At the same price that Comcast offers Blast! in my region, unless the pings are consistently 25% slower to every server visited, I'd seriously consider sticking with FiOS, at least until DOCSIS 4.0 (or whatever the next major overhaul is named) is ready to be delivered.
I do keep a close eye on what Comcast is doing in my area. I'm certainly not committed to Verizon and I would pull that plug if something more substantial was offered from the cable company. I only moved from Comcast once FiOS started offering a ton of new HD channels this past November. To be honest, it will take a lot from Comcast to get me to come back, as I am very happy with the TV and internet service provided from Verizon...so far.
Edit: Comcast isn't really equivalent to FiOS at the same price except for speed tests and relatively small files. Blast! is equal in price to FiOS 20/5 service. Blast! is only 16/2 after the first 20MB's down and 10MB's up. Try timing a 100MB file or larger and you can really see the difference, especially uploading. I went through these exact types of testing 6 months ago when I made the jump from Comcast to Verizon. Only, back then, the limits were 40MB's for PowerBoost. These limits have since been lowered in my region.

The same power boost that uncaps your modem for the first 10MB of a download to give you the flimsy result that you're getting more speed when you run a 5 second speedtest?
That powerboost? Works great at 9 am tuesday morning, btw - the few times their nodes aren't oversaturated.
I get my 20/5 24/7.
