| Modem/General Issues
I suppose I'll give you the old details... I used to have 1.5 meg service, worked fine, hardly ever dropped and was Usually at full speed. Then I moved. However, the new house is very close to the old one, not even 2000 feet I would say. Windstream runs crap-copper wire to the new one "Because it is more than 300 feet from the main line, too much for data cable." For about 6 months after we move, the 1.5 holds fine. Then, out of the blue, it drops, Hard. Disconnects every 15 minutes, 600Kb/s on good days, 0 when raining. Low SNR, High attenuation. I downgrade my connection just to keep it alive, but it doesn't do much, it still drops frequently. The tech says "it's probably bad cabling" (that's how I found out about the copper). I ask if they can fix it and he says "No." Citing that he hasn't seen any problem with it because he watched it for 5 minutes and it didn't wavier at all. I try again later and the CS guy got angry that I refused to accept "That's as good as it gets" when I've had better.
Skip ahead about 10 months, and I still have the 512k, and luckily it stays up indefinitely when the wind isn't blowing and the rain isn't falling. When it does go out though, it will never re-establish the connection. I have to manually do it, and sometimes it doesn't work even then. Would this be caused by something wrong with the modem? Lightning strike or something? (Speedstream 5200).
Since I wrote all that about my problems and WS seems to actually be Trying to fix things, does anyone have suggestions on how I could regain my internets? |
