So I recently decided it was time to upgrade from your standard off the shelf network device to a ProSafe FVS318v3 Its easy VPN capability & Price was what decided to make me go with this option.
The device came in in less time than I had paid for (a plus for Netgear).
The device was easy to set up, including all LAN rules, services, and the VPN.
I noticed I began having high latency. I connected one of my PCs directly to my ISPs edge device and got the speeds I should be (25Mbps Down and 3 Up).
I reconnected the FVS318 and ran the same test - I got 2 by 1.
I connected my old off the shelf Netgear WNR2000 and ran the same test, I got 24 by 3.
I reconnected the FVS318 and disabled SPI and all the rules I had -- no improvement in speed.
Needless to say I've already got my RMA number and have ripped the device off my network. |

| The FVS318v3 is a nice router however has been on the market for nearly 4 years. The specs for it are tops 12.5Mbps LAN-WAN and something like 2.5Mbps over a VPN tunnel. Real world is obviously a little less than marketing figures.
For your connection speed in a Netgear business class router you'd be looking at the FVS338 which has 75Mbps LAN-WAN and 19Mbps over a tunnel. |
