This might be whats happening
Completely cancelling his AOL account might actually cause him to lose his AOL email.
Rather than cancelling he probably needs to change his AOL to what used to be called the BYOA - Bring Your Own Access Plan. (It might be called something else now. ) The BYOA plan gives you AOL for free when you use some other ISP to connect to the internet.
The BYOA plan does not include any type of tech support or dial-up access. There are also various paid access plans that do include tech support and limited or unlimited dial-up. And there used to be other access plans that included other extra features, but I don't know all of what they offer now. They may have been trying to sell him one of those other plans.
He should look at Keyword Billing, or it might be at myaccount.aol.com now, and look for info on the various AOL access plans. He should be able to make the changes online. Maybe he'd be more comfortable if you looked over his shoulder while he made the changes online. |

1 edit | Thank you, Poincare!
I went to the URL myaccount.aol.com and changed his billing to the Free Plan, which allowed him to keep his AOL email account and inbox. -- CampaignForLiberty.com "Educate yourself." |
