Re: [TWC] Rochester RR and cable modem question.

I do think that you are being too paranoid. I do believe that you should be able to plug the new router into the Ambit to test it. And as you said... the ethernet port on the phone modem has been disabled ? Look... I used to have their phone before I went with MagicJack and my set up is the modem connected to my Linksys router. The computer that I am on now is plugged into the router and my wife's laptop and son's desktop and ps3 are wireless. Everything works fine and is rock solid steady.

I called them and they said they would need to come and configure it if my router goes bad and and I wanna use theirs. (fees applied).
Is there anyway I can test a router before using it? Can I plug the router into the Ambit Gateway I have and test it?
Also, if I plug the router into the phone modem, would I have a decrease in performance when somebody's on the phone?
I apologize for being paranoid, it's in my family
I am the original poster, btw.

Thanks for the response.
Say if something is to happen my router, and I want to go back to using RR's gateway (I can install it myself, if no other configurations are needed, i.e. plug and play using ethernet cable), except for the 5 dollars/month, will I be charged some other fees?
That is something that I cannot answer. But the router that you bought is a good one and you should not have any troubles getting it set up. Don't let them talk you out of your plan. I have been using my own routers for a very long time with no troubles whatsoever.

OK... seems like an easy solution to me. Tell TW that you wish to cancel the wireless service and then exchange the Ambit for the Scientific Atlanta modem or whatever one they are using now that provides both VOIP and internet. Then you will be able to plug directly into that modem with the Linksys router and get it set up.

It is important to note that you should hard wire into the Linksys router initially when you are setting it up according to the instructions that were provided with it.

I live in Rochester, NY and I use TWC's all the best package. To have them waive the 5 dollars/mo fee, I decided to get a linksys router (WRT54G) and install it myself. When I plug it into the back of my cable modem (Webstar DPX2203, which according to the tech person when I called, is use for phone only, but there is an ethernet port), it doesn't work. I can't surf the net and I don't get any responses from pinging addresses (unless it's the router's ip or my computer's ip). I called them and turns out that they somehow disabled the port and if I want to use it, I have to pay extra. Has this occurred to anybody trying to accomplishing that? I plugged my computer directly to that same ethernet port and I get an invalid IP (169.254.x.x)

Side note: The router I have right now is a gateway. It is a modem and a router combined (Ambit U10C019)
