[Unstable] e8400 @ 3ghz , Vcore a 1.35

1.35 is that too much Voltage just to run at 3ghz?
it wouldnt run at stock V. which was 1.25 by default in bios settings

Re: [Unstable] e8400 @ 3ghz , Vcore a 1.35

It's ok up to 1.3625volts, however...
I would try to determine why it's not stable at "stock"?
What are your temps?

I know enough to troubleshoot my system (most of the time), but I don't know enough to give anyone advice on their systems.

The one thing I do know, you have to get it running stable at stock settings before you attempt any OC'ing.

Hope you get your issue resolved.

There ARE CPUs that don't overclock with stability. I had an AMD a few years back that was a "bad one out of the batch". But first, like they say, you have to go through all your settings. I don't know anything about Intel systems right now, so I wish I could, but I cannot, help much.

Re: [Unstable] e8400 @ 3ghz , Vcore a 1.35

The CPU should certainly be able to run at stock voltage stably. Have you ruled out other components of your system as culprits?
Have you done any overclocking with your RAM, or video card?

Re: [Unstable] e8400 @ 3ghz , Vcore a 1.35

Well for some reason mine is unable to run at stock voltage.
I could run a memory test with Ultimabe boot cd
if i try a cpu burnin test.. it would crash and reboot even before unzipping the files and executing it.

Well its a brand new machine with only a cheap video card and 4gig ram.

I dont even know how to OC.
I was just trying to plug everything in and install windows without OCing, but it would crash after clicking on the first NEXT button.

i tried running at 8.5 x333mhz although my default speed should be 3ghz not 2.8ghz.. but it failed..
Was trying to load the computer with the default settings.

I tried it with one ram, then the other one, then different sockets and also moved my video card to another socket.
all failed.

then trying to change the voltage of my Ram to 2.0~2.1 as specified by the manufacturer. total failure.

Oh ya i even changed my SATA cable and tried to plug it in Sata-0 / 1 / 2 / 3 and gave up.

then next step was to increment the Vcore until i reach 1.35 which by then i was able to click on next and proceed with the installation of windows..

took me about 16 hours without sleep to install windows.. was not a pleasant experience.

Re: [Unstable] e8400 @ 3ghz , Vcore a 1.35

That's really a strange problem. I know it happens, but it's pretty rare for a chip to be bad.

Just a buncha food for thought....

-Whose mobo? What controls vdroop? How much vdroop? Can you load it? Vdroop after load? Although you are setting the voltage high, I'm just wondering what actually delivers to the chip? Whose ps? size?

Whose ram? What type? speed? Says bios speed is 800=ok. Turn turbo off on ram and loosen timings to 5-5-5-15?

EDIT: I don't understand how you can fine tune the clock ratio if CPU host clock control is disabled. Probably should set bios to load optimized defaults (except cpu volts) until you get through trouble shooting.

If you can troubleshoot that chip in another mobo, (Intel will ask) they "WILL" replace it.

I know nothing about Vdroop first time I've ever heard of it. i don't know much about OCing, still in the process of learning.
My last computer was way back in 2000
all i did was to install everything and turn on the computer and install windows, voila everything working fine.

I thought that all i needed was to do the same thing like in the old time and plug everything in and just run windows installation disc and it should be good to go, but that is not the case.

I did try to set my RAM to 5-5-5-15 at 1.8v then 2.0 then 2.1, no luck, computer would reboot as soon as it tries to load something.
As for turbo , i did try to set it to standard , no luck.

load optimized defaults , failed too..

I dont have another mobo to try it on

If you're curious about my Bios
Feel free to check this site , its a little simulation

Re: [Unstable] e8400 @ 3ghz , Vcore a 1.35

Those are quality parts, let's start from scratch.

Download cpuz, install to desktop, you will use a lot.
»download.cnet.com/CPU-Z/3000-208···423.html

Turn off your pc and unplug power supply. Press on switch to discharge capacitors, then press off. Touch case and power supply. Remove battery for 2 minutes. Don't scuff around on the carpet. Replace battery. Plug power supply back. Turn system on.

I still want you to click optimized defaults. Then leave everything as is, except lets work on that vcore and ram.

Hey,hey, I own almost that same mobo for one of my quads.

Go to mobo intelligent tweaker. Try cpu-v at 1.2875volts, enable load line calibration (just above cpu-v). Set your ram at 2.0 volts, so we don't gamble on ram-spd-auto.

Will it boot to windows?
If so open cpuz, what is the drooped voltage?
Don't be alarmed about a low multiplier/frequency. We will fix later.

If not, leave LLC enabled, ease volts up some until you can boot to windows.
Tell us volts, then Post us a screenie of the voltage drooped.

We have lots more info now. Surely some of us can help

Ok it's getting 1.328volts.
What did you set vcore at in bios?

exactly 1.35 because lower would cause a reboot of the system.

Re: [Unstable] e8400 @ 3ghz , Vcore a 1.35

Ok, these were my thoughts...

Either that cpu is not getting the voltage or the cpu requires too much voltage (meaning bad).

Your vcore of 1.35v is delivering 1.328v according to cpuz. Not too much droop. This eliminates the PS and mobo in my mind, because you are delivering the voltage.

I have an EP45-UD3R, same as yours without extra sli slot.
Notice this comparison of vcore for a 95watt quad overclocked to 4.0ghz versus your 65watt dual with almost the same components. My voltage is very much less.

Your required voltage is very much too high. I honestly do believe you have a bad cpu.

Re: [Unstable] e8400 @ 3ghz , Vcore a 1.35

You're very welcome. Now you can disable all that thermal stuff in bios, reset clock, etc, etc.

This will gain you back to your 333 x 9 (3.0ghz)stock clock until you send your cpu back.

Good luck to ya

That's just crazy. I don't even have to give my e8400 that much voltage to run stable at 4.25ghz.

Keep us informed as to how things go when you get your replacement chip.
