[F@H] Team Helix Points Graph

I've been showing a friend of mine how to use RRDtool. As my demonstration, I decided to graph total points produced by Team Helix from the F@H page.

The retrieval scripts runs every 4 hours, but the graph draws every 5 minutes...

Comments and suggestions welcome. This isn't going anywhere, so it can be used in the FAQ, etc. if so desired...

We changed the collection URL and reset the RRD's. The URL we were using went dead when Stanford started their updates. (oops)

We also turned on autoscale on the graphs, so you sighted folk should be able to see better when the value changes.

The only way I know what at looks like is when someone takes my finger across the screen.

Aaron says the data is graphed in some kind of pink color, but I can't figure out how to change it. The docs mention a three-byte hex value for "RGB" but I don't know what that means. Any suggestions?

Aaron says the data is graphed in some kind of pink color, but I can't figure out how to change it. The docs mention a three-byte hex value for "RGB" but I don't know what that means.
A one byte hex value ranges from 00 to FF (0 to 255 decimal). There is one byte for each of the color components (R for Red, G for Green and B for Blue) and the value of the byte indicates how much of that color is present with 00 representing none and FF representing maximum. All other colors are composites of these three colors. White (all colors maximum) would be FFFFFF while black (all colors off) would be 000000.
To specify alternate colors for rrdgraph you need to use the option -c or --color followed by a tag for which color you want to change, a hash symbol and the 3 byte hex color code. The tags are:
ARROW for the arrow heads
AXIS for the axis of the graph
BACK for the background color
CANVAS for the background of the actual graph
FONT for the text color
FRAME for the line around the color spots
GRID for the grid lines
MGRID for the major grid lines
SHADEA for the top and left borders
SHADEB for the bottom and right borders

The example in the documentation shows --color ARROW#00FF00 to make the arrow tips green.

By the way, the graph isn't pink it is magenta (which consists of red and blue and has the hex value FF00FF).

OK, I figured out where the color is defined. JAWS wasn't reading the code right.

I'm going to leave it as-is, unless someone wants another color, I just couldn't figure out how to change it if necessary. (JAWS doesn't always like things like this)

-- This post didn't work this afternoon, and I didn't notice. Let me try again --

Sorry, I screwed up the graph. We accidentally put the RRD's on the wrong HDD, and when I took it out after today's backup, I lost them. I changed the path to where it should have gone to begin with (note to self: don't work on this in the middle of the night).

I already put the hard drive in the safe, and didn't feel like digging it out again for less than 24 hours of data

I will be taking the web server down around 9AM CDT for an hour or so to put new rails in the cabinet. Hopefully I won't break anything (including my fingers...)

I think I fixed it this time. Before, if Stanford didn't reply correctly, the script returned a zero. Now, if Stanford doesn't reply correctly, the graph will just use the previous value until it gets a good value from Stanford. This should take care of the graph dropping off.

To quote my eyes (Aaron): "Damn, he's good"

I can't see the graphs, but I understand the perl code behind them...
