| [AB] Downtown Edmonton Issues
Has anyone else downtown Edmonton been haveing issues with thier connection dropping at random times during the past week, with your machines (multiple) not being able to resolve any DNS or ping past your Shaw router?
Shaw has had 3 downtimes now the past week where you call in and its so busy you get a busy tone and no support.
WTF is going on, is this getting resolved? Does anyone have more technical information about this?
When the service works its awesome, no issues at all for 6+ years but this now is just unuseable.

| Yes, sadly when they have issues here so many phone it that it overloads their switchboard and you just get a busy signal.
Its about to puke again.. can tell, starting to slow down. Called shaw again and they are still clueless, tracert shows noticable pauses and retries to get though even the closest routers.
Tracing route to www.shaw.ca [204.209.208.8] over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 * * * Request timed out. 2 * * 7 ms rc1ar-ge5-0-0-20.ed.shawcable.net [64.59.189.98]
3 9 ms * 9 ms rc2ar-ge12-1-0.ed.shawcable.net [66.163.70.26] 4 13 ms 12 ms 23 ms rc1no-pos13-0-0.cg.shawcable.net [66.163.77.177]
5 32 ms * * rd1no-ge6-0-0.cg.shawcable.net [66.163.77.6]
Usually waiting 5-10 min and resetting the cable modem give you 1/2 an our or so of connection, then back to the same garbage. |

| reply to Baud1200 Don't know if this is the cause to your problem, but I experienced the same exact same issues to a T that your describing.
Shaw said signal was fine, and was not sure what was going on.
I put in a request for a modem swap, phone support said sure was worth a shot. I drove down to Shaw swapped out my 5101, and they gave me 5102.
Turned out modem was on the fritz and everything went back to normal.
Hope your figure out yours. |

Hope your figure out yours. I too have no issue reaching Shaw, and as you mentioned it could be caused by something simple on the user end just as much as it could be Shaw. The weekend of April 17th in the Bonnie Doon area we went through connections issue where the modem stays online but the noise on the line is too high, but they had that fixed by Monday, other then that I think the last time I went without internet was for 2 hours last fall. SO For me Shaw has a 99% uptime on their network As for this guy Im suspecting he's too impatient to wait on hold, or to select the option for a callback. ( great feature on shaw phone support while on hold). |

1 edit | reply to Baud1200 I too am having DNS issues. A few sites that were working fine a few hours ago, I cannot resolve host names for.
Edit: I just switched over from shaw's DNS servers to openDNS' servers (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220), and everything is working perfectly. There's something fishy with shaw's DNS it seems. |

1 edit | I just noticed that just now. I noticed two weeks ago we got here in edmonton a new DNS server. »Shaw just add a third DNS?
but today mail.yahoo.com didn't work, www.aintitcool.com doesn't work just now. but If I go back and click on the link two or three times I can get the url to work. even Cnet's website wasn't loading. Maybe packet loss. |

Theres a noise issue on the cable that feeds my node in downtown edmonton. I'm at/near jasper and 104th. Our line during peak hours maxes out at about 200kB/s. This is about 1/10th what we can usually get.
At times, I've had to move traffic back to our T1 as it's faster than our Shaw Xtreme-I link as the T1 is faster *sigh*
Still an ongoing issue as of friday when I called them last. |
