Add an image fetcher?

Hotlinking should be discouraged as much as possible, so how about we add an option to the attachment interface to put in a url of an image to rehost it? It would save a TON of time spent downloading images and uploading them here, and it would probably cut down on hotlinking a lot also.

Lots of the big, free, image hosts do this. (look at imageshack for an example).

Here, I even made a nice mockup:

Personally, I'm neutral. However, if I were justin See Profile, I would reject the idea.

The effect is that dslreports will be responsible for determining the intellectual property rights, whereas with the current method you are responsible.

Not sure how this helps anything.

Click on the URL, click on the download.
This saves 1 click of the mouse.

I don't get what you're saying.

You see a picture online you'd like to attach to a post:

Currently you have to right click it, save it to the desktop, then upload the image, then delete the image from your computer.

With this way, you just copy the url of the picture and paste it. The site saves you the downloading and uploading procedure.

I'm not familiar with the legality of hosting copyrighted images, but how does the method of putting it on the site change anything? It's me putting that image on the server either way, is it not?

No. It seems to me that the site would be directly fetching the image from whatever site you specify in the url. You are just asking them to do that download.

So what happens when I do this?

I did not upload that copyrighted image, I just told dslr to do it.

I mean, if you can find a source that says what you're saying is true, than go ahead and post it.

Sounds like it's hotlinking through the post window.

uh, no. You should read up on what hotlinking is, and why rehosting images is very much preferable to it. This isn't hotlinking.

I understand how hotlinking works.

You want the site to go to the url grab the image instead and upload it to it's servers?

I still object.

yes, saving the process of downloading and reuploading. It's not hotlinking, it's a way to PREVENT hotlinking.

It does not in any way prevent hot linking.

User wants to hotlink an image because he is lazy.

Instead, user uses this to upload the image to dslr because it is easier than downloading the image himself and uploading it. Hell, it's just as easy as hotlinking.

Outcome: No hotlinking.

Is there something you're missing?
