That picture isn't the cause of your blown margins -- note how there's easily 600+ pixels of empty space to the left.

That's just silly in my opinion. By that argument they should just turn off the ability to upload any attachments, most HTML, YouTube embedding, etc. Not to mention that you're simply assuming that most or all of the images would have restraints against such redistribution. If your web site is not intended to be viewed then don't make it public -- do you take similar issue with Google and Wayback Machine caching?

No, BBR didn't on its own reach out and grab an image. One way or another, it's just a user-initiated functional sequence of events.

I'm not referring to the time it takes for you to transfer the bits. Look at Mose's timed example. He's a guy who hotlinks instead of uploading because it's five times faster. This makes uploading images you find online (something we already encourage) as easy as hotlinking (something we discourage).

No. It seems to me that the site would be directly fetching the image from whatever site you specify in the url. You are just asking them to do that download.

I'm not familiar with the legality of hosting copyrighted images, but how does the method of putting it on the site change anything? It's me putting that image on the server either way, is it not?
