I am not sure what you were attempting in step 6.
You should not be doing step 8 - that was surely a mistake.
Step 9 should not be needed, as it should default to that. |

| So now go to Advanced LAN -> DNS
For the domain name put the Connection - specific DNS Suffix from the ipconfig /all that you ran earlier.
Then under "Static Host Assignment" Add 192.168.0.1
.....
Under Router Settings:
DHCP Client should be disabled.
In the boxes, fill in whatever you wrote down from ipconfig /all.
After you are done filling out the boxes press set.
Now press edit again, this time enable DHCP client, and press set again.
That's the step 6, step 8 and step 9 I was trying to follow.

Okay, thanks for clarifying what you were doing.
The "static host assignment" under DNS probably doesn't do anything important. I do use it as follows.
I have a machine that I have given a static IP on my LAN (192.168.1.101). This allows me to assign a name to that machine, so that the name is recognized by the 327w. If another machine on my LAN does a lookup for this name, it will get that local IP address. And I can use that name, instead of the IP, when setting up port forwarding. But, apart from that, it doesn't actually do anything important.
I do set a domain name, but I do that in the "domain name" field. It does not surprise me that you cannot set that to empty. It isn't important for anything. I set the domain name to my work domain for my convenience. My wife works elsewhere, so it is wrong for her work domain, but does not cause her any problems. I suggest you not worry about the domain name, or just enter something bogus but innocuous.
Back to your original problem:
11. the config page refresh and attempts to connect but stuck at renewing. Your ISP may be assigning your IP address to a specific MAC address, namely that of the computer you use when directly connected to the modem. I don't think there's a way of telling the 327w to clone that MAC address. Most home routers can be set for such cloning to work around the problem.
You could try: Connect your computer directly, so that you can get an IP address that way. Then, in a windows command prompts, use:
ipconfig /release
When you get a command prompt back after running this command, reconnect through the 327w and see if it works. Note that whether this works or not depends on how your ISP is managing its IP addresses. The hope is that this will remove your MAC from their DHCP table, and allow you to use a different one. If it does not work, then your only choices may be to call your ISP to have them manually intervene, or to use a router that supports a "clone MAC address" functionality.

after that the IP address shown became something like 169.254.29.186, and I would entirely lost connection.
Then I unplug the ethernet cable, replugged it in, and did ipconfig /all, the IP address would then appear to be the same before I did /release.
So does that mean I'm screwed and have to get a new router? |

| It means that you have to call your ISP to change the MAC address uses, OR you need a router that can clone your computer's MAC address.
Having dealt with large bumbling bureaucracies in the past, I would assume that getting a router is the easier way. |

| OK, one more symptom, internet works on my laptop, which was what they used to set up the internet and stuff when they were in my house installing the wires and the cable box. However internet doesn't work on my other desktop.
I have Windows Vista on my laptop, ipconfig /all shows the normal IP address.
I have Windows XP on my desktop, ipconfig /all shows IP address as 169.254.105.91. Also just recently installed Windows, didn't work before reinstallation, didn't work after either
Both computers were able to access internet when I had Verizon, using the westell 327w back then. |

| That's likely the same problem. The "169.254" addresses are what you are assigned when DHCP fails. Unfortunately, they are only useful on the local net.
It seems that the MAC address of our laptop is what your ISP recognizes.
Both worked with verizon and the 327w because the 327w is a router of sorts. |

OK, just got it to work.
And for future reference and for the benefit of others here's what I did.
I called TWC, they reset the modem and everything worked. |
