i'd like to know

Where did anyone get off thinking their data plan would follow them around the world, considering their carrier doesn't even have operations in that country?

Maybe from the misleading advertising campaigns like AT&T does touting their network and what you can do from around the world??

Some of the adds that AT&T and Verizon run are a misleading. AT&T has a commercial running about some guy who gives a way shoes and talks about using his phone in Africa some where. Most people who do not understand how the cell network works will think that AT&T has towers in every city around the world.

How many people remember when you paid for roaming on another carriers network?

I agree with the commercials that they show, especially ATT. They even claim they have the best service around the world, which would lead one to believe they do have towers around the world.

I can remember when you paid roaming, but that was many many many years ago, but with some companies, they still DO charge roaming.

But it never implied, ONCE, that it was going to be free, or cheap, did they?

AT&T just blanketed the Airwaves here in Tulsa with their "Zero bars in Brussels, we're stuck here with Slad and Veeder, the Dancing Techno Twins"....

Now, granted, the commercial is just talking about connectivity to AT&T's network.... but this type of ad clearly leads consumers to think having AT&T means you have service internationally...

Another problem is I'm sure most people figure it's going to cost them extra. They just have no clue HOW MUCH EXTRA and when the bill comes they FLIP.

No, but they never, ONCE, mentioned that there were additional costs on roaming or other fees either.

Hmm, you DO get service internationally. But, anyone is a FOOL to assume that they pay the same price no matter where in the world they are!

The contracts and rates are extremely explicit and tell you EXACTLY what you will pay for what services wherever you are.

I went to London last year. Before I went, I checked on data and voice rates for roaming on my wireless plan there. I added a feature to my plan before I went that saved me $$ on my bill. Guess what, with judicious use of my phone and data services, I didn't have a $5,000 bill. In fact, including data usage, it was around $50 more than my normal bill. How could this be??

You're adding fuel to the argument that the ridiculous bills are nothing but massive gouging, given the actual costs are very very VERY much lower (as proven by you...)

Actually, my costs were lower because my usage was curbed because I knew what the rates were before I went.

I pay the same retail rates as every other customer.

Then why did you say this:

To me it sounds like you added some kind of international data feature.

I did, I added international something-or-other for I think $3.99 a month. saved me quite a bit.

My point is, I read my contract.
I knew I was going out of the country, and wanted to use my phone while there.
I planned ahead, and used my phone sparingly, and got a reasonable bill.
