Comcast Says that Can't Port my CallVantage Number....

I just spoke to Comcast about porting my CallVantage number...they said no dice.

That is odd, since another CallVantage number I had was ported by my FAX service about 6 months ago.

Anyone else have this issue????

Is this number local to where you live?

Yes...

Weird. Did they (Comcast) give a reason why they can't port it? maybe you just hit a bad rep or something.

No...they did not...

I told them I would have to consider other alternatives...possibly, you are correct...maybe I will try back and hope to get a different rep.

Oddly when I ported my MCI POTS number to CV and then dropped CV because of endless infuriating technical problems, MCI told me I could not take the number with me, AND I'd couldn't even be an MCI customer. I had to be a Bell-South customer. This all occurred inside of 4 weeks. On the other hand Vonage had no problem moving the number from CV. Odd.

In your case, MCI was no longer offering local phone service to new customers.

The inability of Comcast to take your number is somewhat surprising. As frustrating as it will sound, it may be necessary/worthwhile to port back to POTS as an interim step to your provider of choice. (Do understand that I would consider multiple ports to be a relatively last resort--no point to complicate things unless absolutely necessary).

That is interesting...but I agree...maybe as a last resort....

Why port to POTS? just port to a PAYG VoIP provider and forward the calls until you can figure it out with Comcast or whoever.

(of course, you could always just go with a VoIP provider instead of Comcast, but that's a different discussion

What is the area code and exchange of your number (that is, the first six digits of your phone number)?

That's often helpful to know, because this may be a ratecenter issue.

I agree that you should not HAVE to port to POTS. My thinking (perhaps in error) is that the ILEC who "owns" the number (e.g. to whom it would revert for reassignment if the account is disconnected) would have more 'pull' in getting the number.

I don't think it matters. As long as CV doesn't put up any resistance then any carrier will be able to port it.

Aye, there's the rub.

AT&T CallVantage will not even release a number to AT&T Wireless. I can't imagine that they would do so for a competitor. The above image is the status of my attempt to port a CallVantage number to AT&T Wireless, and this is after the AT&T Wireless Port Administration Center tried to manually intervene and force the port process.

Was it the main number on the account - or a "virtual" number? so far we've had no problems porting main numbers, but AT&T does refuse virtual number ports and unfortunately there's not much anyone can do about it.

It is the main number on phone port 1 of the DVG-5102S ATA. I guess that tomorrow morning I will attempt to make a conference call between AT&T CallVantage and the AT&T Wireless Port Administration Center to see if that helps, but my previous experience with trying to port numbers from AT&T POTS lines to Vonage tells me that I will probably be wasting my time.

If you still have the CV will disconnect letter and a printout of your bill, bring them to your local Comcast office (without a hammer.. ), and see if those documents will help. Please remind me--what reason did Comcast give for the port being rejected?

If I recall correctly Comcast needs to have an arrangement with the original owner of the number block to do the port. Other than ATTWS and Broadwing (which is now Level3) I don't know the rest of these guys. They likely would have had porting agreements with AT&T (allowing the original port to CV to take place) but perhaps not Comcast.

I ran into the same problem when I tried to port my ATT CV number to an ATT Wireless account. I was told that they could not port a number to the same company, and that ATT CV was considered the same company as ATT Wireless.
I ended up Porting my CV number to a PrePaid Wireless accout (not ATT). I have checked and could now port from the PrePaid wireless number to ATT Wireless if I wanted to. However, I am please with the PrePaid and will stay for now.

They did not offer a reason...they simply said they could not do it.
