NA = North America.
Other versions will have different channel allocations. |

| reply to dcurrey I upgraded from 1.22 last night and so far so good. The router has been stable and is actually playing well with my Airport Extreme both running N networks. Under 1.22, I had to shut down the N network on the DIR 655 and only use b and g to get things stable on the Airport Extreme.
Now why the two routers? The Airport Extreme does an amazing job at handling external USB drives. Maybe Shareport will take a hint here. On the Airport Extreme, I run a USB hub and hang two drives off it. I can also run a printer simultaneously here is I choose. One that is for my backups via Time Machine and the other is a FAT32 drive that both XP and Mac can share. I run a small client from Apple on the XP machines and connect as a guest. The reconnection at start up is automatic and requires no intervention. Again - Shareport needs to get to this point to make it easy to use. |

Thus you cant use it. |

3 edits | reply to dcurrey Well, for insane reasons, got brave and updated an A3 and A2 router yesterday with 1.31, seems solid SO FAR. Smooth update, 1.21 saved settings files restored beautifully, no quirks in the process at all. I just hope the 1.30/1.22 tendency to just stop making connections is fixed! (my previous router uptime was 45 days with 1.21)
(They should have just made the Advanced DNS setting automatically set the OpenDNS servers for DNS. heh) |

1 edit | reply to dcurrey Well I decided to risk the plunge from 1.22b05. b is indeed there. I find I still have the same issue with b and n though. When I turn on b,g and n my Palm TX doesn't even see the network and can not connect even knowing the SSID and WPA2. With B and G only on my Palm has no issues whatsoever.
I notice there is some behavior that is indeed different though.
When I logged in 1.22b05 with graphical off (wish that where the default) I had to click the login button pressing return did NOTHING. Also 1.22 would jump to the Status->Device Info page on login. Strange this seems inconsistant.
1.31NA with graphical off the return key on password logs me in (yeah) and I see the Setup->Internet page not the Status->Device Info page. (Like the org firmware 1.10 did)
I would like more information on the Advanced DNS switch no info on the help pages. It defaults to off, think I'll keep it off.
rev A3 1.31NA PPPoE B&G WPA2
Guest SSID on WPA
One laptop connecting via wireless G mode, One desktop G via a USB dongle in addition to my Palm T|X in wireless B mode and wired are 3 desktops 2 blueray's and two DirecTV DVRs (one HD one a hacked TiVo) |

| I use north american firmware on my european A2 DIR-655 since version 1.11b39, and I never had a problem. I also have all the 13 wireless channels available, and the firmware correctly states the wireless domain as EU in the "/version.txt" and "/chklst.txt" pages. |

Seems to just set an alternative DNS service similar to OpenDNS but with no config ability like with an OpenDNS account. As to how reliable it is compared to OpenDNS is yet to be seen I suppose.
I assume you meant the info in the 1.31 help is not very informative, because the setting is described there (bottom of the WAN section). |

Advanced DNS is a free security option that provides Anti-Phishing to protect your Internet connection from fraud and navigation improvements such as auto-correction of common URL typos.

| reply to wookies wookies and all the ships at sea,
Most Vendors have changed the way channels are handled. Fact, the FCC forbids non-qualified folks from changing software that can change things outside of the USA legal limits. So to be on the safe side they (most MFG) are going to hard wired channels and power out that is not effected by the software as it once was.
As far as 1.31 I have been using it for several days now and if their is any problems with it I don't know what it could be. But let me say that I am not doing anything fancy and my current router usage is three machines on Ethernet and one laptop on "G". UPNP on and no other port forwarding so I can't speak to anything in that area that might have some problems and I would never know.
Now here comes the subjective lies, as others have said I do believe that it is snappier over all. I also saw where kgb7 said he saw a 20 db increase in signal strength but I don't think he said in which direction. I am not trying to goat you into a one-way street but so far so good on my end (did I just jinx myself, who's paranoid). |

I think you are in fact using a EU not a NA firmware. We only have 11 channels |
