| Speedstream 5100 Modems (Yes, I'm looking for _cheap_) These seem to be in great supply on various internet sites.
If I'm planning on using them with Bell Sympatico in Canada, a PPPoE based-provider, but as a bridge to a router, do I even need to care about the PPPoA/PPPoE mumbo-jumbo I'm reading about it? There appears to be "a" and "b" versions, some doing PPPoA, etc. Does this matter?
If the firmware is "SBC crippled", is that a problem if I just want to use the thing as a bridge? |

kudos:18 | There are also simple "Bridge Only" Modems out there aka Model 5667 and Model 5360 (and other non-Speedstreams) also the Model 5100a (SBC's 1st version 5100), but they are standard ADSL (G.DMT, G.Lite, and ANSI T1.413 support) with no future upgrade path to ADSL2 or ADSL2+ as the Hardware can't do it. I believe the SBC 5100 "a" and "b" both are in that same boat with no ADSL2 or ADSL2+ support. The 5100b is a single PC router, when in PPP/Router Mode.
In Bridge Mode and configured to the correct VPI/VCI for the ISP I can't think of any Modem that would not work.

No, the PPPoA/PPPoE mumbo-jumbo will not hinder your intended use

No, the a/b indicate if the modem has the PPPoE/PPPoA client built into the modem
The 5100b has the built in PPPoE/PPPoA client
The 5100a is a bridge modem, no built in PPPoE/PPPoA client

Its not a problem for your intended use
If you could compare the sbc/att user interface to the factory user interface you too may call the sbc/att user interface crippled
The speedstream 4100 and 4100b are clones of the 5100b
