1 edit | [TWC] Several Breaking Stories - Powerboost/DOCSIS/Results
Powerboost being deployed to all standard service RR customers DOCSIS 3.0 in 2009 for Only One City: NYC Results are excellent for TWC: Compare and contrast comments to investors with usage based tier propaganda....
All from this morning's investor conference call, which I was parked on. More on stopthecap.com. So much MORE ammunition now. |

That explains why I was hitting 18 -20 Meg on speed tests.. while subscribed to 7 Meg/512k service. |

| reply to Dampier I still can't believe Time Warner is so clueless as to what the consumers want. All of their competitors offer higher speed tiers yet TW is the only company who doesn't see the need for DOCSIS 3 and higher speed tiers. Unbelievable. I bet their DOCSIS 3 deployment will be delayed and our rates will triple for 20Mbps download speeds.
Keep digging yourself deeper TW, you will soon be a 6ft deep! |

2 edits | reply to Dampier Is PowerBoost being deployed to all of Queens?
Since it came out my speeds have stayed on at the stock 10/512k speeds.
Docsis 3.0 equipment in Manhattan seems good even though I want it in Queens as well and it seems like they have every intention of rolling out the equipment to Queens as well.
I guess Docsis 3.0 should be here sooner rather than later and maybe Powerboost could be an interim solutions? |

| All of Queens should already have powerboost....BUT it makes no difference because the nodes are so overloaded. When my node was split, I was seeing 20k downloads throughout the day. Then TW started putting more people on my node and speeds slowly started to drop even with powerboost. |

| I am in Forest Hills, NY. I am in Queens and have never had powerboost.
I have an RCA Docsis 2.0 cable modem. Modem has been rebooted many times. I can assure you PowerBoost is not here.
The question is, if it will be added here as an interim before Docsis 3.0 comes out. If not, I gather when Docsis 3.0 is introduced here, I will get the best technology they have. But that won't be for awhile yet right? |

| reply to MacAlert very true...over the years the speeds on roadrunner have dramatically declined...
the nodes are overloaded, and DO NOT believe them when TW says a tech will be there to fix it...
in flushing, (queens) nyc and college point, which are the only areas i can speak for, customers are NOT a priority...
extremely poor service and straight out LIES when they promise you certain DL speeds in the flushing/college point area...
and they have NO problem wasting your time with service calls by apathetic techs who can't fix problems that are caused by the network...after you wait weeks for an appointment...
TWC is everything that is WRONG with a cable ISP... |

| reply to FHBroadband said by FHBroadband :Is PowerBoost being deployed to all of Queens? It is coming to every Time Warner area. There is one region where work is still in progress, and it was not specified which one. But I suspect in the northeast, it's a matter of days, not months. Buffalo apparently has it now.
The slow speeds issue sounds like network congestion. That could be one reason for DOCSIS 3.0 in the Big Apple first, if it has proven costly to node split in many areas.
Here in Rochester, when the service works, I never see a slowdown pretty much ever. For a lot of us, we'd rather keep the speeds we've got now than face a crazy usage cap.
I tried DSL and that was a disaster. Just 3.1Mbps service from Frontier. No way.... |

| I'm in NC, and was surprised to read a post in this form less than a month ago about powerboost speeds in NC. Sure enough, I rebooted my modem and now have powerboost. I have been thinking all this time that it was just a competitive move because of U-verse now being in the area, but it seems from this latest information, deploying powerboost across it's entire footprint is TW's idea of a DOCSIS 3 upgrade without the DOCSIS 3. So we get cheated out again, while every other large cable operator seems to be well on it's way deploying DOCSIS 3.
TW says they listen, but by that they must mean their investors, not their customers. This type of thing happens in most for profit companies these days, so it's nothing new. What I can't get a grasp on is how all the other big cable companies are well on their way to deploying DOCSIS 3, and TW only has ONE market in the works. Cheap doesn't even begin to explain TW.
If TW was listening to me, they would know how much I would appreciate it if they increase upstream speeds. They need to either increase upstream across the board, such as 1 mbps for standard and 2 for Turbo, Or at the very least implement powerboost for uploads too. Even though I have said negative things about powerboost in the past, it does have it's uses, and if anything, having upload powerboost would make my 384K upstream speed more bearable if it could boost to 2+mbps up for the first 5-10MB of a file upload.
BTW, Dampier if you read this, I love the stopthecap site you have going. Lots of good information for the public that people should know about. Keep up the good work. I haven't had time to read up on everything yet, but so far I'm really enjoying it. It's quite apparent now, as I had thought all along that the caps were only a way to prevent people from watching video online by making it prohibitively expensive. In the face of most consumers though, it makes anything prohibitively expensive, even if their activity isn't at all related to video. It's unfair for those of us who use our connections for other things to have to pay the price of a cap, because TW is afraid of losing video subscribers. |

| FWIW, I see where TW might start only metering HSI or HSI+DP customers, and possibly leave the triple play customers alone. This whole, verify you have already paid for the content stuff seems like more work than it's worth, and from the sound of it, all this restriction is not so much the cable providers fault, it's the content owners who are pressuring the cable companies to implement these backward idea's on their HSI subscribers. |

| RR User that is so far from the truth. First the the content providers are bringing forth the newer technologies why cause the ISP's don't want to pay to do the upgrades that are needed. the ISP's that want to impose these caps to make a ton of money for themselves, and hinder any progression of newer technology. all to save themselves of doing the upgrades and to impose caps to go from 120% profit to 1000% profit. |

i all ready got 2mbps upload on turbo (most areas of SOCAL)
but most of the time i only get 1.5mbps or less
oh btw i do use my internet unlike others
see Signature below
oh yea if they put caps in my area (highley Doubt because of hevey Competition) i'd use a few TB permonth to get my moneys worth -- April 2009 (Incoming: 258696 MB / Outgoing: 153957 MB) |

RR User, you are right on the money in your comments about more upload speed. We here in Rochester cannot quite figure out why we are still getting by on 384 on the upload. We don't need no stinking Powerboost up or down... we just need more upload. 1 meg would make me happy. |

@rr.com
| It's my best guess that TW would be more likely to do an upload powerboost than actually increase upload speeds. I'd take either one at this point, but of course I would rather have higher upstream speeds instead of powerboost.
I'm fixing to switch to U-verse anyway within the next couple months if TW doesn't do anything to address their slow upstream. I have made due with 384K upstream far too long, and I hear U-verse calling my name. If only it was Fios I'd have switched the day it was available, but I guess U-verse will have to do.
WyckedKnight, I never said it wasn't a profit grab. Sure it is. TW wants all their customers to pay for their service 3 times over, and they will figure every way they can get them to do so. TW has always been overpriced. Personally, I don't have a problem with TW trying to keep their video service relevant. Yeah, they should be scared about people cutting the cord, but don't slap a 20-40GB cap on me, because you think I'm stealing content that I haven't already paid for. Some people use their connection for other things than watching TV online. I use mine for voice/video conferencing. I'm a TV customer as well, and most of the video I do watch online is part of my cable package anyway, but I watch it online because it's most convenient for me. So they can go about protecting their content and business model all they want, as long as it doesn't interfere with my use of the web... (ex: caps or overages).
Punker... I don't understand your post. You tell me not to complain, yet proceed to rub in your 2mbps upload and 410+GB of bandwidth usage. At $1 a GB, TW could make some serious cash off you. |

| reply to Dampier Well for what it's worth they have one less Turbo user. I just switched to Uverse Max 18 today. Same price, and faster in every way (except ping is higher). I love actually having some upload for once. Working from home was so much smoother today.
I'll come back when you get off your ass Time Warner! |

@rr.com | reply to CLT User I've heard about the higher ping. Other than gaming though, the higher ping doesn't have any negative effect on other activities, correct? Like Skype or whatever? The only reason I ask is the primary use of my upload is now skype/video conferencing. |
