Yet another WCG200 Ver2 modem router trouble Baton Rouge, LA

We have poor 1 mbps download and 300 kbps upload speeds with COX HSI Baton Rouge using a Linksys WCG200 ver 2. We have read some of the posts about this combination cable model, router, and gateway. Cox supports and sells this unit as shown at »support.cox.com/sdccommon/asp/co···d4e5f5ad

Firmware version is 2.0.3.4.2-50428 , Linksys site does not show what is the latest XP firmware , see »www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/sup···download

Cox does not recommend any particular power levels, only signal to noise ratio (SNR) of more than 36 db downstream and more than 32 upstream.

If anyone is familiar with this modem particularly in COX baton rouge service area, can you advise what parameters work to maximize your broadband connection?

Here is what the modem parameters read:

Acquire Downstream Channel 705000000 Hz Locked

Downstream Channel
Lock Status : Locked
Modulation : 256QAM
Channel ID : 2
Provisioned Rate : 883 kbps
Symbol Rate : 5360.537 Ksym/sec
Downstream Power : -4.0 dBmV
SNR : 36.6 dB

Upstream Channel
Lock Status : Locked
Modulation :16QAM
Channel ID :3
Provisioned Rate: 294 kbps
Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream Power : 58.5 dBmV

actually, power levels down should be as close to 0 as possible, and upstream should be in the low to mid 40s.

If anyone is familiar with this modem particularly in COX baton rouge service area, can you advise what parameters work to maximize your broadband connection?
given all of the posts that have had issues with this modem/router combo, i would highly suggest getting a new modem.

For what it's worth, we have stopped selling those units due to problems we've had supporting them. In general, wireless gateway modems are difficult to troubleshoot due to not being able to seperate the modem and router components. Either portion of the device could experience a problem requiring a complete replacement to resolve.

Your Upstream power is at 58.5 dBmV which is way out of spec (Max allowed is 52). You will need to call your local call center and set up a TC to get that addressed. Also PM me your modems MAC address and I'll make sure that you have the latest approved firmware for your modem.

by looking at the caps, it looks like its only provisioned for the value tier or is this another modem that doesn't display its caps right.

upstream signals are still way to high and your downstream is lower than it should be. more may still need to be done to get those levels in spec, but that will be a plant issue that shouldn't require a specific "house call"

dvd536, what are you looking at that tells for what tier of service this modem is provisioned? what is caps and where is it shown in modem parameters?

Speed after the service call is still poor.

I just had Cox TC come out today and these parmeters are still off. Do I just have to keep calling them to fix their power levels?

First, Call Cox and verify what tier you are on and how much you pay a month for intrnet... It looks like you are on Economy as digi mentioned...

there is only so much that can be done at the premise. while i am no cable expert, its only logical to think that if you are getting poor signals *to* the house, you can't magically make them better *in* the house.

as posted in the thread:
»[ALL] what to post before complaining about slow speeds...?

said by tubbynet See Profile :

•if they have splitters and if the cable modem has been plugged into a line directly from the wall (bypassing all splitters and surge protectors)
make sure that you are as close to a "homerun" as possible. check your lines to make sure they are of good quality and your connectors are the compression-type (not twist- or crimp-type) and that nothing is corroded or loose.

if that doesn't fix the signals, work with the techs on the board who will work with your local center to adjust your levels at the ped/tap.

$20 for less than 1 mb/s download + $50 for expanded cable is a bum deal. Are there any better deals in zipcode 70810? I have seen fiberedge TV and internet for $50/month in Gonzales area.

Not that I know of. $20 is a steal for those speeds. I remember many years ago paying $20 for a 56k connection.

I do agree on the cable being too high, I signed up more than a year ago when DishNetwork had their HD only package special running. $43 a month after taxes for a ton of HD channels (including Cinemax) with their DVR, plus I had $100 rebate and a $50 off two bills, free equipment and installation, and 3 months free of all the HBO/Starz HD channels. It was a deal I couldn't pass up and Cox couldn't match it.

But *unlike* DISH, Cox *DOESN'T* lock you into a contract for TWO YEARS!
And should hard times hit you and you decide to kick DISH to the curb, theres a nice fat ETF waiting for you!
