wonko3fc : Beware of advertising!

Having switched between ISP,s several times in recent years (I didn't know there was a diff with Max/ADSL2+ either!)
I get 3Mb/s + or - a couple of bits regardless of the supplier! - suspision being then that despite promises to the contrary form the sales team, you'll probably only get the 6Mb/s or so you had last time.
I have however, noticed a BIG latency difference between suppliers - Esp when they 're-configure' their networks to allow additional capacity for more customers...

From my experience, when I was rolled over to the Max (2+ / whatever it is) it was unstable until I moaned a bit and got 'interleaved' as I do use VoIP. Not being a gamer, I'm a tadge hindered, but I suppose if you really want to be up the top of the high score list, you'll need to splash out for a Leased line - not anywhere near as expensive as they used to be and a 256Kb/s or 512Kb/s connection will equal or better the xDSL Mb/s transfer speeds and your latency will be about as good as it ever will be - at least to your ISP termination.
Lots of Telco suppliers will give you a LL if you want to explore that option so may be worth making a few enquiries ...

Alternatively, if you don't have LL money, consider a professional or Business class connection from BT. I've noticed a distinct improvement with speeds, reliability and support with that one - but careful, you pay for it.

xiphrex : Here here!

If it werent for the current economic climate I think I would just leave my connection alone, but now Im thinking "£25 per month for only 3mbps and 256kbps upload - surely I can get better for that kind of money!".

I didnt even know they had turned interleaving on. The problem with interleaving is that is apparently can double, or at least increase your latency, or ping. I do a lot of online gaming so if I can get my ping even lower then thats great! I wouldnt have really noticed had my router not said "INTERLEAVE" as my ping to UK servers is usually around 40-30ish which is not bad, but apparently there are different levels of interleave and my level is moderate.

Anyhow I seriously considering asking for ADSL2+.

I actually think I made an error earlier in that it wasnt ADSL2+ but ADSL MAX which I had tried before. Didnt know the different until today!

So maybe it would work out okay with ADSL2+? I mean Nildram say I can achieve 9mbps on ADSL2+, but even 6 or 7 would be wonderful! Plus the upload speed would be at least better than 256kbps!

Its just the worry over the bloomin stability...
--
The internet makes you stupid.

wonko3fc : Hey dude, welcome back!

Interleaving is ISP set - it allows smaller packets to interleave between larger ones generated by VoIP for example. Will asking the (probably reluctant) IPS to turn it off make your connection any faster? Probably not.

Regarding ADSL2+ My symptoms were similar to yours and interleaving solved the problem.

SNR is what it is, Changing it requires digging up the street(s) But you are well within tolerance.

I'm flipping over to Plus.net for £5.99pcm up to 8Mbp/s (I normally get about 3Mbp/s) 10Gb cap.
Why am I going there? 'Cos it cheap!

[ADSL] Help with ADSL SNR etc!

xiphrex : Hi guys, its been a long time since I posted on these forums!

Anyway Im wondering if one of you can help me.

I just got a new router, the netgear DGN2000 and its flashed with the latest DGTeam firmware, which lets me see advanced features/statistics.

Here are my ADSL stats:

/usr/sbin/adslctl: ADSL driver and PHY status
Status: ShowtimeRetrain Reason:	0
Channel: INTR, Upstream rate = 288 Kbps, Downstream rate = 3072 Kbps
Link Power State: L0
Mode: G.DMT
Channel: Interleave
Trellis: ON
Line Status: No Defect
Training Status:	Showtime
 Down Up
SNR (dB):	23.4 29.0
Attn(dB):	42.0 22.5
Pwr(dBm):	18.8 11.4
Max(Kbps):	7968 960
Rate (Kbps):	3072 288

I have a few questions on this:

1. It says the channel is interleave - does this mean I have interleaving on? If so, can I ask my ISP to turn it off and turn on fastpath without causing my line to be unstable (judging from my SNR etc)?

2. Are my SNR and attenuation good?
3. I am paying £25 per month for 3mbps connection that is still based on the fixed bandwidth older technology of ADSL - should I ask my ISP to regrade me to a newer ADSL2+ connection and try and get more speed?

Reason I ask question 3 above is because last year with another router (DG384GT) I tried out the new improved speeds of ADSL2 but I could only get to 6mbps and the line was very unstable - it would drop sync in online gaming randomly. I used to think this was because of a poor line.

Any help is much appreciated! I tried reading on all this SNR/ATN stuff last year but was confused even then!

Thanks!

--
The internet makes you stupid.
