nwrickert posted : Okay, thanks for clarifying what you were doing.

The "static host assignment" under DNS probably doesn't do anything important. I do use it as follows.

I have a machine that I have given a static IP on my LAN (192.168.1.101). This allows me to assign a name to that machine, so that the name is recognized by the 327w. If another machine on my LAN does a lookup for this name, it will get that local IP address. And I can use that name, instead of the IP, when setting up port forwarding. But, apart from that, it doesn't actually do anything important.

I do set a domain name, but I do that in the "domain name" field. It does not surprise me that you cannot set that to empty. It isn't important for anything. I set the domain name to my work domain for my convenience. My wife works elsewhere, so it is wrong for her work domain, but does not cause her any problems. I suggest you not worry about the domain name, or just enter something bogus but innocuous.

Back to your original problem:

11. the config page refresh and attempts to connect but stuck at renewing.
Your ISP may be assigning your IP address to a specific MAC address, namely that of the computer you use when directly connected to the modem. I don't think there's a way of telling the 327w to clone that MAC address. Most home routers can be set for such cloning to work around the problem.

You could try: Connect your computer directly, so that you can get an IP address that way. Then, in a windows command prompts, use:
ipconfig /release
When you get a command prompt back after running this command, reconnect through the 327w and see if it works. Note that whether this works or not depends on how your ISP is managing its IP addresses. The hope is that this will remove your MAC from their DHCP table, and allow you to use a different one. If it does not work, then your only choices may be to call your ISP to have them manually intervene, or to use a router that supports a "clone MAC address" functionality.
--
AT&T dsl; Westell 327w modem/router; openSuSE 11.0; firefox 3.0.9

anon posted : I just switched from Verizon DSL to Time Warner Cable/Roadrunner but they only gave me a modem (Arris) and I want to use my old Verizon modem as a router for all my computers/laptops.

I tried to follow the guide on configuring 327w for Comcast but it didn't work out. The router stuck at renewing connection.

Here's what I did:
1. I did ipconfig /all with my computer connected directly to the modem,

Here's the information from ipconfig /all:

Connection-specific DNS suffix:
DHCP Enabled: Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled: Yes
IPv4 Address: 24.........
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 24.........
DHCP Server: 76.85.238.35
DHCPv6 IAID: 201333177
DNS Server: 66.75.160.63/66.75.160.64
NetBIOS over Tcpip: Enabled

Notice the Connection-specific DNS suffix appears to be empty.
I put ...... for the IP address and the Gateway but they are actual numbers.

2. I unplugged the Internet and plugged my computer to the E2 port on my 327w.

3. I opened 192.168.1.1, and did factory reset.

4. It asked me to wait for DSL to connect. I clicked cancel, then setup the admin/password.

5. I made a new connection by pushing next all the way until it finished. VPI and VCI are 0/35

6. I went to LAN setting and added a hostname with 192.168.1.0. However I cannot change the domain name to empty.

7. I went to the WAN setting and switched DSL to E1 port.

8. I set it to bridge mode and entered all the info in ipconfig /all

9. I enabled DHCP

10. I plugged modem into 327w's E1 port

11. the config page refresh and attempts to connect but stuck at renewing.

Anyone know what's wrong, or what specifically needs to be done for TWC, or anything different that I need to do for TWC but not for Comcast?

Thanks in advance
