Grats on Fios

I know I was hoping for it in the past but the other day when I loaded up the DSLx site, I was surprised to see the Fios advert now on DSLx. It seems like its available in my area which is wonderful to me. Been hoping DSLx would.

One question however, on PPPoE for it, is that being shared with others in the area? Came across a site that suggested it might. I haven't been fond of the cable style idea for internet. Then also since DSLx is going through Verizon for this, it is just straight internet? No TV or phone add on? Have been considering VOIP for phone as Verizon's prices are getting outrageous and unpredictable.

Currently on the 3000/768 line over in Network 3 and its been good for years. But this change does have me really considering upgrading. Wasn't fond of Fios at all through Verizon due to their lousy tech support and service. But i've always had the best support through DSLx.

Also, will there potentially be any change in pricing for the older DSL packages in time?

Hi NC37,

I do not have a lot of info about the new service but I can answer some of the questions. Currently we are only offering the internet as a standalone product. I don't see where you would have any trouble getting FIOS internet from us and TV and or Phone directly from Verizon over the FIOS.

I was told we would be offering the FIOS as DHCP and Static IP and the modems(which are actually Wireless Routers) would not need any additional configuration. If our website says PPPoE will be the configuration method that is news to me so I am looking into that.

Hi NC37 -

We did a soft launch of our new DSL Extreme Fiber service this week. The product is being offered in all Verizon areas that currently support fiber service. Though similar to Verizon FIOS, it won't be branded as FIOS as that is a trademarked name specifically for the Verizon retail service.

The product is offered as DHCP for residential clients and either DHCP or Static IPs for business clients. There is not an option due to a Verizon limitation for static IPs at a residential location.

The service we offer is just the Internet portion of the product. If you want to get the TV or Phone portion you can do that directly from Verizon just as you would today with a DSL line from DSL Extreme and phone service from Verizon.

Currently we are offering a free setup and free router lease starting at $39.95 for new clients for the 10,000/2,000 package under a one year contract term. I recommend the 20,000/20,000 for $59.95 as the best value package. Verizon is currently using the Westell 9000 series routers which include a 4 port router and Wireless G support.

I currently have the 50,000/20,000 product installed at my home. The performance is great!

We will likely do our official launch of the product in the next few weeks.

Thanks

Do you block ports 25 and 80 for residential FIOS like Verizon does?

Yes, inbound Port 80 is blocked, on residential and dynamic IP business accounts. However, Port 80 is opened on business accounts with static IP addressing.

Does the bandwidth route through the DSLExtreme network, like my AT&T DSL does? I love your peering. I can get verizon FIOS at my bay area office....this would be my excuse to do it, through you guys....

The service utilizes the Verizon IP network. Due to Verizon not being able to separate out the Internet and TV services in their network and backhaul just the Intenet portion to our network, it has to utilize their IP network.

So if I wanted to, I could get Internet through DSLx then add on phone or TV with Verizon which runs through the FIOS line?

Hmmm, this has me curious. Although, I don't know how far i'd get through basic Verizon support agents. I've had some of the worst of the worst. I guess i'll have to see if I can scrounge up some info on their services outside of the packages.

I would be paying more for net, but if I could get the phone for less, it would help a lot. Currently on an unlimited plan which was the best value at the time. Started at about $50 and now it's gone up to over $70. Just keeps rising.

But 20k/20k is really tempting.

Thank you for answering the PPPoE question. I'm fine with DHCP, thats what I use now and i've really no need for static.

Can you go into any details on the FIOS lines in the long run? I know there might be downtimes, thats just a given. But is it generally as solid as your DSL lines?

And again, thank you for your help. Always thankful for you DSLx support folks.

well this is awesome news especially since its significantly cheaper with you guys. Are there plans or do you think that in the future the actual connection will be routed through DSL Extreme like with DSL packages? One of the things I like about DSL Extreme is the routing.

Chugging along on 2x 6016/768k DSL Extreme DSL lines and one 6016/768 ATT DSL DIrect line as well as one 16mb/2mb Charter cable line for a combined total of just over 32 meg download and 3 meg up (after overhead). yay!

What Router are you guys offering? How is it different than Verizon's router?

And does it to Coax to Ethernet bridging if I only have cable and not ethernet running from the ONT outside the house to my office inside my house?

I noticed that. I plugged in my own address (and I'm way out here in Maryland, but in a known FIOS area) and found that I can get your 20/20 Ultra service for $59.95 (which is the same price VZ charges for 20/5). I had been thinking of DSL Extreme as primarily a *western US* company; it's nice to find that you also will work with us eastern folks (and on FIOS, no less).

Thanks for all of the positive feedback. I am glad to see many people are as excited as we are to offer the new fiber service.

I believe I may have errored in my earlier comment regarding port 80. Fortunately this one is an error may have a positive outcome. I got confirmation from Verizon that port 80 on the product that we offer is in fact open. I have done an initial test by opening up remote management of the router on port 80 and have been able to connect from the outside. I have not had an opportunity to configure a web server and test but all signs indicate that it is in fact open. I will be double checking in the next few days to fully confirm though.

Thanks

Yes, you would be able to get the Internet portion from DSL Extreme and the TV and phone portion from Verizon. We would bill you for the Internet portion and they would bill you for the TV portion. There packages and pricing would be separate from ours as we don't control the TV/Phone pricing etc.

Thanks

We are using the Verizon supplied modem. During the installation process the Verizon technician will bring it out and install it at your location. It is a Westell router. I believe it is a 9000 series. It is a wireless G router and have pretty advance firewall settings etc.

The Verizon technician will utilize your existing coax cable using moca.

Thanks

Thanks PGHammer See Profile. Though we are based in Los Angeles and have local US support here in LA, we do have a nationwide footprint on our DSL product and offer the Fiber product in all areas that Verizon currently offers it.

since the verizon ont allows for a cat5 ethernet connection, does dslx allow for this?

would i be able to insist on this configuration from the verizon tech or would i be billed by vz or dslx?
