Is there some feature or fix you need? If not and you love what you have, why the need for an update?

I am very happy with the performance of my current version and wonder what might motivate me to update to the next version.

In the past, each new version has enhanced it, so while i too ma happy with what I have I'm looking forward to whatever improvements might be coming. I suspect some tweaks to TCP Vegas and QoS and maybe a VPN endpoint.

I'm hoping for a new build from the developer, let's hope he builds some of that in!

Agreed, specifically this item:

# UPnP daemon is replaced with MiniUPnPd with NAT-PMP support. UPnP is disabled by default.
I've mailed Jon twice about the need to move away from the horribly-written existing upnpd, which is known to crash under odd circumstances (and there's no automatic restart of this daemon).

I don't agree with the default (being disabled), but I strongly advocate the use of miniupnpd.

Now that you mention it, I have had issues with upnp on Tomato too. I always blamed it on my devices... does Jon ever answer?

Click for full size
Tomato 1.23 UPnP screen (with some detail redacted)
Is this more like the UPNP you'd be interested in?

I'm less concerned with "features" and more concerned with stability. upnpd can -- and will -- either exit or segfault (I haven't determined which) for unknown reasons. It has to be restarted by hand, and you have to know what arguments to give it for it to work correctly (which you only know if you've dealt with this problem, or made note somewhere what shows up in 'ps' ;-) ).

Many times, restarting the daemon by hand causes it to start for about 3-4 seconds, then die off again. The only solution for this is a reboot.

When the daemon dies off, it takes with it all its port forwards, and stops accepting new UPnP requests (obviously). The end-user has no idea what's going on, why it broke, how to fix it, etc...

Arguments on my WRTSL54GS:

  133 root 1584 S upnp -D -L br0 -W eth1 -I 60 -A 180

I've looked at the daemon code, and libupnp, and it's an absolute mess. There are some obvious hacks added, and it's pretty disgusting (the original source comes from Linksys, remember!). libupnp is from Intel, and is the version circa 2002. Intel's since released a newer library version, which is not API-compatible with the old. And even better, Intel doesn't even maintain the library any more.

I've sent him many Emails over the years (for multitudes of reasons), and I've only ever gotten one response -- a response to the Paypal donation I sent him. I greatly appreciate his efforts (sincerely), but possibly he's too busy with real life at this point to actively provide support for Tomato. I don't know.

The UPNP version of Tomato 1.23 I'm using, has replaced the current Tomato 1.23 UPNP with MiniUPnPd with NAT-PMP support.

It appears to be very stable, and seems to provide superior UPNP support compared to vanilla Tomato 1.23.

There is also an optional security feature which restricts applications to only open UPNP ports to their own LAN address (this prevents other LAN devices from being affected by another UPNP application).

Thanks -- I decided to try out Tomato 1.23 ND USB "Lite" tonight, and so far I'm very impressed. I think I'll be sticking with this build of the firmware until Jon can catch up... The NAT-PMP stuff is a wonderful improvement for sure.

I do wish the author of the ND firmware would make a website for this, though. The existing method of firmware distribution is a little... well, it doesn't give me warm fuzzies. It's like "here's a router firmware, from some random dude on a forum, with the files posted on some questionable website". Ah well, I'm nitpicking.

Try some of the mods to Tomato:

I've got Victek's MOD with USB/SAMBA/FTP/Print server ability:
»victek.is-a-geek.com/tomato.html

There is one by Thor with VPN functionality:

...although I'm looking back to DD-WRT or Oleg's firmware so I can add a torrent client and other available Optware packages:

Someone already suggested that. I have tried the mods, But I'd prefer to stay with the official releases. I'm currently running dual Tomato routers (one for AT&T, one for TWC).

I have the WRT54GL and at first i upgraded it to the latest official version 4.30.12. The problem was that the UPnP would stop once i restart my PC and i have to log into the router and click on "disable UPnP" and than back to "enable UpnP' and it would start to function again. I hated that so i began searching for UpnP improvements and i stumbled to the Tomato firmware releases and i found that in one build there was an a point that was dealing with UPnP:

*Fixed UPnP may not start sometimes, changes made when deleting manually are not saved, connect may block for a long time. - Tomato 1.08

And so i flashed to Tomato 1.23 vanilla and it all works now. I have restarted my PC 2 times for the last 25 hours and it is still working !!! Should it stop working i will most likely add the Victeck's modded tomato but for now im a happy carrot.

I wish Jon would post SOMETHING, maybe a hint towards what's coming, or when. Would be great to know.

This is one of the many signs of the upnpd process dying off. The only way through the UI to get it to respawn is doing what you've described -- and on some occasions, it just dies off (immediately) again.

I explain this situation earlier in the thread.

Make sure that the two services in your windows are turned on:

*SSD service has to be on "automatic" and "started"
*UPnP service has to be also on "automatic" and "started"

This along with Tomato 1.23 + NVRAM clean + restore defaults right after the update from the stock firmware has been rock solid for me for the past 30-40 hours. I have also been fiddling into safe mode and restarting my PC a few times due to display driver updates. All works for now like a charm.

Question for you guys. I noticed the newer versions of Tomato with ND. The file has .trx Now when upgrading Tomato. Does it still upgrade fine or does it need to be renamed to .bin? I have only loaded .bin files before for Tomato upgrades and a bit confused on what to do with the .trx file

I dunno about Windows, but the UPNP thing doesn't work well with Macs or my NAS either... I have to set it manually.

I'm surprised no one knows Jon, or that he doesn't chime in. Think this fix will be in 1.24?
