Letter to GTE Management

I am bewildered by your DSL marketing strategies. I have been inundated with marketing materials suggesting that I subscribe to DSL. I would very much like to subscribe to DSL with Verizon.
By sending personalized materials to my house inviting me to subscribe to DSL sets an expectation that the service is available to me. It isn't. That gives your marketing department an "F" grade in my house and amongst the people I talk to. I don't mind (so much) that it is not available. What I find objectionable is that you set an expectation by targeting me, and are then completely incapable of meeting the expectation that you set. It is worse because you have perfect information. You know the phone number, you know the address, you know the subdivision and its demographics and yet you still persist in generalized, unsatisfactory mass mailings.

When the service is available to my house, I should like to hear about it. Until then, please do not set false hopes.

Your representative's poor excuse yesterday when I called to order the service was that, "It's just a mass mailing." If it is mass, then don't make it look personal.

Sincerely yours

I second that motion.... in theory the marketing department screen candidates for dsl availability. The only thing I can assume is they do it by the npa/nxx combinations present at the co and then hit the surrounding zip codes to that central office. People don't mind not being able to get the service, I have found. It is when it is NOT Available and NOT Planned is when people get irate. Also, the fact that marketing is done is areas where ther is no hardware available at the central office still baffles me. Do you know any of the specifics on your line? Loop length or other information?

The rep you spoke with was correct. It was exactly that. a mass mailer. Verizon looks at their database of capable CO's, looks at the list of customers that connect to that CO, cross reference them and clicks "go" The computer takes the customer information, prints it on the cards, and some poor bastard gets a few gallons of water and starts licking stamps It's called canvasing. I did it when I worked for a realtor. I found an area that matched the specs that I was given, went to a haynes (criss cross) directory, inputted the names and addresses, and the computer made everything look pretty and personal. hell, it even signed her name in blue. We had no idea if these people wanted to sell their homes, or even if they were homeowners.
It may very well be that your specific line is not capable, but many others in your area are. It would take months to test every line and only send a mailer to those people. Even if that was done, a line may show as capable in the database, but after further testing it might not be. While you do have a somewhat valid complaint, do you complain to every company that sends you what is in effect junk mail? If you sent a letter to every company that sent you a credit card application for a card you don't qualify for you would get tired fast.

Marketing is often planned well in advance as well, so it is possible for it to be available when they plan it, but then the CO could be out of equipment by the time it gets to the customers. It is also possible that the area was planned for ADSL, but pushed back after the mailing has been made. Just some thoughts.

Well my take is Marketing Droids came up with the 39.95 price break idea and ran with it. ITS still being advertised in the mail (I still get the mail even though Im on hold/limbo) and on TV and radio. My sales rep says that Oregon/Washington is overloaded "YET THE DIMBOIDS STILL ADVERTISE". Im at my 30 day mark and now I hear 30 - 45 more days. Argggh. My crappy ISP is up dec 31 and I dont want to renew. Plus my Sales droid is saying any day now still, even though I presented evidence to the contrary. How about factual information Verizon, not just market hype.
