Re: Sandvine-CRTC filing. "DPI is necessary" said by isp RX dpi :said by sbrook:the Revenue eXtraction LOL Guess I should explain why i "LOL'd"
Per Sandvine:
23. Targeted advertising provides a good example. This type of solution can enhance the Internet experience for subscribers
More user enhancement heh
30. Service providers are just beginning to explore other uses of DPI that can make their service offerings more attractive to consumers in an increasingly competitive Internet access market. High-speed Internet services are largely offered in the form of flat rate, monthly, unlimited plans.
LOL unlimited? What country does Sandvine operate in again?
They seem to be in their own little world and not in Canada!
31. For example, "light" Internet consumers may be interested in a service package that ties their fees to their actual Internet usage.
Again this shows Sandvine don't live or operate in Canada. ISP's are charging people full rate for less B/W consumption now. Whoever wrote this isn't all there.
31 continued.. A DPI-supported policy solution can distinguish between traffic that a service provider would characterize as billable and non-billable
Oh like a Bell movie service with no B/W charge!
32. Other consumers may be interested in a service package that guarantees a high quality of service for certain frequently-used, latency-sensitive applications, like Internet video gaming or VoIP.
I said it before and I'll say it again... there will be new latency tiers coming out. That low ping you have now will be a billable item. Wait n see. |

hmm @mc.videotron.ca | What I also find interesting in this whole Sandvine thing is the fact that people support Sandvine. (which seemed to have someone from Sandvine posting, but hard to say. If I recall right Sandvive tried to sue p2pnet a year or two ago, or gave him a take-down which he refused Something like that.)
I was reading the continuation of the original p2pnet article which is here »www.p2pnet.net/story/21212 and people are defending the right for Sandvine and other DPI makers. Basically saying what many of you are saying...
The right to the technology has to exists just like P2P has to exist (as a comparison). The blame lays in the ISP using the capabilities of this technology similar to using the capabilities of torrent for pirating.
In other words, how its used needs to be regulated as opposed to the fight to not use it at all.
Kind of interesting. People are defending the Sandvine commercial using the same argument that is before the CRTC (in regards to DPI).
Took me for a loop seeing people arguing that side of it. Which in a way, I guess is true. |

You have Sandvine employees, and "users" of DPI pretending to be Average Consumers and spouting off benefits of DPI.
They feed good PR lines to create favourable noise towards DPI. Hence by hearing DPI enough the public assumes its indistinguishable from Network Management.
