tschmidt posted : Unlike most other counties US does not have much in the way of Internet broadband policy. Each company is free to optimize its business any what it chooses. This tends to favor short term profitability vs long term growth. Almost all the cost of delivering Internet access to in the First-mile. If First-mile providers decide not to upgrade their network things come to a grinding halt.

The other problem is Cable companies and to a lesser degree Telcos are worried high speed access will undermine TV offering. Once First-mile speed is fast enough the door is open to IPTV undercutting first-mile provider's lock on that service.

May want to check out some of Andrew Odlyzko's papers on the subject.

Internet TV: Implications for the long distance network

Network Neutrality, Search Neutrality, and the Never-ending Conflict between Efficiency and Fairness in Markets

Threats to the Internet: Too Much or Too Little Growth?

Too expensive to meter: The influence of transaction costs in transportation and communication

/tom

FUD about the capacity of the internet

dustinrjo posted : I'm currently raising money for a start-up company that relies heavily on the assumption that the USA broadband markets will eventually develop into an environment where 14/2 mbps and 20/5 mbps are basic broadband floors.

Recently there has been a lot of news about how all this new traffic from TV shows and filesharing on the internet is going to grind everything to a halt and a lot of complaining from ISPs like Time Warner Cable about the need for metered billing as a way of stabilizing the entire infrastructure to save it from collapse. I know this isn't true, but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or expertise to help clarify this with people.

Why can't Moore's Law apply to the internet and not just computer hardware (which makes the internet)? Why can't we have either a customer serving municiple utility like infrastructure like the Greenlight project in NC that has recently been spotlit nationwide, or simply decent competition among providers across the country rather than a single telco and a single cable company in most parts of the country to provide high speed internet? Why are things so mediocre compared to other parts of the world?
