The other problem is Cable companies and to a lesser degree Telcos are worried high speed access will undermine TV offering. Once First-mile speed is fast enough the door is open to IPTV undercutting first-mile provider's lock on that service.

Recently there has been a lot of news about how all this new traffic from TV shows and filesharing on the internet is going to grind everything to a halt and a lot of complaining from ISPs like Time Warner Cable about the need for metered billing as a way of stabilizing the entire infrastructure to save it from collapse. I know this isn't true, but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or expertise to help clarify this with people.

Why can't Moore's Law apply to the internet and not just computer hardware (which makes the internet)? Why can't we have either a customer serving municiple utility like infrastructure like the Greenlight project in NC that has recently been spotlit nationwide, or simply decent competition among providers across the country rather than a single telco and a single cable company in most parts of the country to provide high speed internet?
