DS Homebrew

I picked up a used DS, and I was thinking of trying the whole homebrew thing (moonshell sounds great).

Seems like there are a lot of slot 1 cards options out there. Any recommendations?

This seems great but a bit pricey. »www.realhotstuff.com/cyclods-evo···213.html

This is cheaper, but is it as intuitive?

I have the CycloDS. Works great, I love it.

If you're not interested in playing ROMs, go for the cheapest one available. They all play homebrew basically the same way. The R4 or AceKard are good choices.

For DS ROMs, the CycloDS is the best, imo.

Cool. Thanks.

I might not be able to resist the temptation of ROMs, so maybe I should go with CycloDS.

Is set up/use easy?

I currently have the Acekard 2i, partly because it was the first to market with DSi compatibility. That being said, whichever card you get, I suggest sticking with the (stable) releases that are usually linked to on the sites for the given card that you do own. I gave Moonshell 2.0 a try and while there was a significant overhaul in interface since the (stable) release, a lot of features didn't work.

Very easy. Basically plug and play. Make sure you get a decent size MicroSD card.

Also, if you tend to use the sleep function a lot (just closing the lid while playing a game), the CycloDS just continues sucking up the battery. I did tests with it about a year ago and found the CycloDS in sleep mode uses more power than the DS with a regular game card completely on.

Supposedly they've fixed some power consumption issues in the latest firmwares, but I haven't tested it yet.

They added an optional (but on by default) "Battery Saver" mode which reduces power consumption during gameplay. There are only a few games where this causes issues. (The World Ends with You, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, etc)

Do these play GBA games, too?

You'll need one of the 3-in-1 add-ons that plug into the GBA slot. I have the EZ3-1 w/ Cyclo DS:

Works great.

On a (somewhat) related note... any recommendations for one that's (hopefully) as fool-proof as possible and will work for GBA (and in a real GBA) ?

If you flash a game to the NOR memory in an EZ 3-in-1 Full Size, it will work in a regular GBA. It has to be the larger version because the 3-in-1's that are commonly bundled with the DS carts are made to fit flush with the DS lite and will not fit in a GBA / GB Player.

I'm considering picking up a DS Lite, considering the extensive line of classic nintendo games that were available for the GBA. What's the deal with these memory cards I see discussed so much? You can play games off of them? As many as you can fit on the card or what?
