Damn. If you really downloaded over 1TB I think I would be less concerned about your news provider capping you and more worried about TWC pulling your connection instead.

I just got Newsdemon. I knew $14.99 a month for their top account was too good to be true.

I went from 1,800KB/s to 500KB/s after about 1 to 1.5TB of downloading.

It starts strong... 2min later... drops. I reboot it.. starts strong.. drops.

THANK YOU NEWSDEMON FOR LYING TO ME. YOU THROTTLE LIKE CRAZY. DON'T ADVERTISE LIES.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest.
I only did around 300-400gb and i was throttled.

Anyway i am very happy with usenetnow, speeds are always very fast. My 1 month was just about up so i signed up for the 3 months at a time deal auto renew.

So is there a cutoff point that applies to usenetnow users?
Not yet, never really been a need to. Although you really need to look at things at the individual customer level I think versus a blanket policy for everyone....Example being (among others) we had a customer using 1.5 TBs coming from 3 separate IP addresses. It is that type of thing where usage should be restricted..either by warning on grounds of account sharing, not being used for personal usage..etc etc.

It started happening to me after about 500GB. Seems to me they'd do it just to annoy their heaviest downloaders and get them to go elsewhere, and it's probably the parent server and not NGD/Newsdemon or whoever. Actually cutting us off would be a violation of terms of service, so this is the next best thing, apparently.
The owners of the servers don't care in this case...as the end users traffic is fully paid for by the provider that you subscribe to. The more you download, essentially, the more the owners make...it is up to the news provider to make limits and decide how much risk they want to take. There terms of service I can guarantee you, is written in such a way that they can do this.

I'm with Astraweb now and will see how that goes!

fyi i canceled newsdemon and moved to usenetnow. So far so good, speeds seem to be higher and more consistent.

For all guys that have this problem:
After the download speed drop down, can you try to uncheck/check some of the connections threads in your news reader ?

I use grabit and in my case and just after I uncheck/check some connections threads, the speed go up to full speed for 5 minutes and after that drop down again... this work for some days but after the speed limit cannot be changed like that...

Here is a picture of it in action. It goes fine for a few minutes then drops down to around ~4mbit. If i stop and resart my connection it will do the same thing again.

Ignore the choppy bandwidth, i had changed it over to SSL to see if that made a difference (it didnt) and it seems to do that when doing ssl which is why i dont normally use it.

Also i suppose there is a small chance it is my ISP Charter, but i havent heard of them doing anything like this yet. Also while this is going on i can start a download from IE or something like that and i will get my normal speed with that file.

Newsdemon started capping me today. Given i have done almost 250gb this month which is higher than my normal of only around 100-150gb.
Did they admit to you they capped you? What were you limited to?
No they didnt, but does it not seem to match up with what the other guys where saying? It was around 4-5mbit.

Are they the only ones doing this? If so then i will be jumping ship. I did get it on their big discount so im only paying like $11/mo.

Thinking of trying usenetnow since they offered beta testing here on dslr, though there are a lot of good offers out right now (astraweb and usenetserver for around the same price)

Do you have any idea what kind of traffic you do per week or month, in terms of GBs? It would seem at least to them, you are running up a certain total that they do not like, within two weeks time.
On May, the problem comes after about 200GB (I download a lots each other months).
I think you are right, they don't like the big amount of my download.. but at least they can tell me that...

Dear all,
I have quite the same problem with NGD and my 10Mbit Cable connection.
Since September 2008 I got this problem:
5 minutes after I launch my newsgroup reader, the download speed fall down from 1.3 MB/s to 300KB/s.
This problem does not appear on the beginning of a month, but in the middle of each month and disappear each first day of the next month.

Here is the test I made:
1- Using my account = the download speed fall down to 300KB/S after 5 minutes.
2- Using another account that a friend lent me = the download speed stay to 1.3MB/s

Some days after my test, my friend hoe lent me his account face of the same problem.

I open a ticket by the NGD Support and here is the answer:
"I have validated that your account is set up properly and our servers are operating normally.
Unfortunately, there is nothing else we can do about speed issues. "

You can be sure I will cancel my "Unlimited - 12 Months" plan ASAP

I'm having the exact same problems with NGD. First, download was capped at around 5mbits/s, then after a couple of days it was capped at 2mbit/s. I sent them an email, and they replied plz. give us traceroute to identify the problem. A couple of hours after the download was the full 10mbit/s again. So I downloaded a couple of GB, an then it was down to 3mbit/s, and after a while it was down to 2mbit/s again.

I have a 3 months unlimited account, and my 10mbit/s connection is not the problem. (it's a university uplink on the country backbone, and all other download tests give a full 10mbit). I've also tried a different location on campus with different IP, but with 100mbit/s connection. Same story. Thinking it might be that my MAC(NIC) was capped on the university network, I tried a 20mbit/s private provider uplink. Same story there too.

So, I figure its NGD capping download speeds. And it figures too, I've downloaded some 1,4TB (1080p mkv's) the last 16 days. I'm probably not a very profitable customer.

Whoever.. I'm partial to giganews myself.. (with them not even hitting there quota's I would only bother with resellers) but considering a astraweb trial with all the buzz about it.. did I try them like 3-4 years ago?? maybe 5.. maybe.. I forget the name of the company back then before I went full newshosting..

giganews proprosed resellers are..
powerusenet is supposed to be one
and in theory usenet.net is too..

Remember most should have trials for yah..

Yeah, I went straight back to NGD after finishing with Newsdemon and NGD was still doing exactly the same thing.

I'm wondering who to go with. Possibly Astraweb?
