| Re: [ Classes] 3.1 mage specs and gear (PvE & PvP) For PVE arcane using a modified 57/3/11. I have the gear for FB for sure, but I don't like it at all. Put out around 4k+ dps on most 10man Ulduar fights. My toon is Knocker on Mal'Ganis. BTW I have two piece tier 8 but does anyone else think that the two set bonus is awesome, but the four piece is terrible? I just think a proc based on a proc doesn't work.
For PVP I use another arcane spec because slow and abarr are just to easy. I have 3 piece hateful and 1 deadly plus the deadly cloak and hateful bracers from honor.
I wouldn't recommend arcane for PVP unless you have higher level pvp gear. You can survive much easier as frost, but you should do more burst damage as arcane.

Arcane is fine all the way through old 25man content in wrath.

| EJ forums rank FB/ttw as the highest dps spec...but just behind it is FFB and arcane is only slightly below that. So the 3 specs are all very close in dps, and if the raid has either a warlock with imp shadowbolt or another mage putting up scorch then it really doesn't matter which spec you take. | |

"Your Frostbolt, Fireball, Frostfire Bolt, Arcane Missiles, and Arcane Barrage abilities deal 12% more damage to Snared targets."
Normally a fb/ttw build is like 18/53/0 but again I'm trying to learn as much here as I can. I don't yet have the gear for a fb/ttw build but I'm getting close.

| FB/TTW Info from EJ:
Optimal Sets (FB/TTW) & Item Discussion --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Introduction
Sites like maxdps and lootrank are appreciated by many because they rank equipment in a seemingly consistent manner. When choosing between two items then, it is valuable to be able to determine which one is better than the other. The problem is that these sites label items as "best in slot" without taking into consideration all other factors. Weight values for stats are not consistent across specs and greatly differ for some stats, like hit rating, and the difference between crit and haste for FFB and FB, despite each spec valuing both stats.
Objective
There are many ways to look at best in slot. For the purpose of this thread, items will be looked at as if everything is on a progressive scale, a ladder of sorts. All of these items are filtered through Rawr, an invaluable tool that anyone can use. I just happen to be putting up my results here for reference, discussion, and possible analysis. This thread will provide a non-subjective look at items, but also take into account the availability, the difficulty of obtaining, said items. It is not meant to be a wish list of equipment, or a list of items in a set that 1% of players will ever complete.
What is Best in Slot?
A best in slot item is an item that, when all other factors have been taken into consideration, provides the highest return for its stats. This doesn't mean then that best in slot is the item with the most stats or the highest ilevel. Just as well, best in slot is occasionally confused with direct upgrades. A direct upgrade is an item that increases your DPS regardless of changes to anything else on your character. Sometimes this is useful information, because it allows a player to quickly guage one item over another, whether in the same slot or not.
However, the end result, and the progression to get there, is what I'm interested in showing. Because of this, best in slot is broken down into each notch on the ladder. A set containing best in slot items will be remarkably different for a person who runs only 10-man Ulduar from one who runs 25-man. It will be different for someone who has 'access' to items that are obtained through Hard-Mode encounters.
"Have you taken into consideration this...?
I probably have, maybe. There are a lot of things I know I don't include or address (sometimes intentionally, such as that one Stormjewel; Power Infusion; Mana Tide; 10 minute fights; AoE; 10-man raid buffs, etc.) If you think it's noteworthy to bring to my attention, bring it up with a reply. Note: I'd rather read a reply to this thread than a private message. I'm not the only one who can answer questions, and there are many players, smarter than I, who can answer things in a timely manner.
Agenda
I don't know. It's somewhere towards the end of this thread, buried between posts.

Note: For any class whose rotation guarantees a critical every 10 seconds, such as an elemental shaman casting Lava Burst with Flame Shock up, the Focus Magic Rate is 1. Naturally though, this kind of defeats the purpose of giving that class Focus Magic in the first place, as they hardly benefit from it. The Focus Magic buff (listed further down) represents FM from another mage. This is the static 3% crit buff. Your actual point investment into the Focus Magic talent is what gives you the additional 3%. The uptime of this is covered under Options > Spells & Buffs. Note: There are a few new items posted on mmo-champion.com that I will update these lists with in the coming days. I'll also need to run all of these lists again using Rawr 2.2.1. I've already imported a few of these items into Rawr. I'll get to the rest later. Anything not listed here I either don't know about, don't care about, or already looked at, (and I guess I could have missed it too).
25-man Hard Mode Conductive Seal Treads of the False Oracle Grasps of Reason Crown of Luminescence Vestments of the Blind Denizen 10-man Hard Mode Fusion Blade Leggings of Profound Darkness Amice of Inconceivable Horror Signet of Soft Lament Pendant of the Shallow Grave
Because most of these items are not on wowhead, there are no socket bonuses listed (some bug), and when I import them, I just use my best judgement to assign an appropriate socket bonus. Blue sockets are typically 5, 7, and 9 Spell Power, depending on slot location, ilevel, and number of sockets required. Red sockets tend to be 4 intellect 4 or 4 spirit. Yellow sockets tend to be 6 critical or 6 haste.

I think you need like 340-400 hit rating including full raid buffs to hit. I've read you want 2k dps unbuffed and like 35-40% crits unbuffed also. If you can hit those marks then you should be pretty good on fb/ttw. Correct me if I'm wrong anywhere someone. Mashiki and Fireballin are the 2 resident expects that I know of on the forums here.

Recommended glyphs: Living Bomb, Fireball, Molten armor or Imp. Scorch
If you don't have a lock with imp. shadowbolt or another scorch mage then you want imp. scorch otherwise go with molten armor.

Scorch up, get LB up, cast Fireball/FFB, weave pyros and refresh dots/debuffs as needed per rotation.
So: SCx5, LBx1, FB/FFBx5-7, SCx1, w/pyro-weaving

Mediocre, since everything is RNG unless you time it 100% accurately you can still end up with a LB tick eating your combustion. Which means that you'd get two crits, and a 50/50% chance of a pyroblast crit. And then you're back to your normal rotation.

I got lazy, I started out writing a list then ran across these on wowhead:
Hunter - Frost Trap, Concussive Shot, Wing Clip Mage - Frost Bolt, Cone of Cold, Improved Blizzard, Slow Priest- Mind Flay Rogue- Crippling Poision, Deadly Throw Shaman - Frost Shock, Earthbind Totem Warlock- Curse of Exhaustion Warrior- Hamstring, Piercing Howl
Warriors (Shield Bash), Warlocks (Aftermath), Hunters (Concussive Barrage), Rogues (Blade Twisting) Paladin (Avengers Shield) and Mages (Blast Wave) also have the ability to daze targets, which will count as a snare too.
Also these: Warriors: Thunder Clap Paladins: Judgements of the Just Druids: Infected Wounds Death Knight: Icy Touch
Hit rating you'll want about 330-340? raid unbuffed, so you'll hit 440 raid buffed(that's with all the goodies like draenei hit, Imp.FF/Misery and so on.
Yeah I used Fire/TTW in raiding right until I quit. I gave it a go in a naxx quick fill about oh a week ago, when the guild was short and I popped on to talk. I still pulled around 4.5-5k in my el-crappo naxx gear.
Good posts imo. Really, from what I heard from my replacement Ulduar is sunwelling mages. So if your DPS looks like shit, it might just be because of stuff outside of your control.

Scorch LB > Scorch > Fireball spam - Use pyro when it procs and refresh LB and Scorch when they expire
From what I see LB and pyro are the main damage dealers. Your fireballs are just to crit for more pyro's.

| For FB/TTW your fireball is your main nuke...it will do 50% or more of you dmg in a fight. Pyro's are second. As far as rotations it is very simple...LB, scorch (if no lock with imp shadowbolt), FB spam until pyro procs...then more FB spam until LB expires then cast LB and more FB. You should make it through 2 living bombs b4 scorch needs to be refreshed. The key to doing good dps as a fire mage is standing still, i only reposition myself when i cast LB or a pyro...b/c they are instant cast and you move while the GCD is up (unless you need to move outta fire or something). | |

1 edit | Re: [ Classes] 3.1 mage specs and gear (PvE & PvP) Yea arcane rotation is very simple. I toss a 4th AB into my rotation since my mana can support that but other then that I use it the same as anyone else. ABx3 then abar if mbarr isn't proc'ed. I will drop a fire blast in there after ABx3 sometimes to try 1 last time to proc mbarr then abarr if I can't proc it but it depends on the fight.

| XCal, Have you been using FB for a bit now? Can you update us on how you like it VS arcane? I'm looking at making this switch as well but dont have the gear for the hit rating just yet. our guild is currently doing 10 man ulduar and not 25. Would FB be better over arcane for 10 man? Just hoping on an update and hear you opinion on it all. hows your DPS vs arcane? I'm just curious as to why everyone says FB is superiour to arcane in ulduar. | |

I just started using it a week ago half time. So far I've tried it in a few raids. I found FB/TTW to be less dps on EOE10 vs arcane for 2 straight weeks now. I think my 35% crits unbuffed isn't enough to proc pyro enough yet tho. It does take a bit of getting use to vs arcane. I'm having a delima on Imp. Scorch or Molten glyph also. Should I just stick to Molten and hope we have another mage or lock who does that or be safe and keep Imp. Scorch? I can't figure it out myself. I guess I could keep like 10 of each glyph on me and reglyph as needed but sheez. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Even with molten armor glyph you can use scorch the same it just takes 5 casts instead of 1. I think it's more of a 10man vs 25man issue for me. In 25mans we always have it covered but in 10mans it's often times missing. I guess I should glyph FB/TTW molten for 25mans and 10man will just suffer. Arcane gives no crit bonus to the raid so I think for the sake of testing apples to apples I need molten to compare dps correctly anyways. I'll re-glyph tonight and test it some more but I think my gear isn't good enough to surpass arcane yet. FB/TTW does really take an insain amount of gear to make it fly.

1 edit | Re: [ Classes] 3.1 mage specs and gear (PvE & PvP) Lol, Yeah I dont know what to tell ya. I tried out FFB awhile back witht he scorch thing but never really got that into it. My crit was too low for it to be any good at that time. Just Dual spec and go arcane for 10 mans and FB for 25's. Lol. I dunno.

| Arcane is still doing more for me then FB/TTW. I guess FB/TTW is very very picky on your gear to max it out. I'm just going to keep using arcane and rolling on FB/TTW gear till I get BiS for almost everything to try it again. I'd be curious to look at some other people's FB/TTW specs for gear to see what they use to pull better dps with. | |

FB/ttw can do more depending on your preference. I prefer arcane and I'm going to stick with it.

Arcane dumps mana super fast which lends itself to IV better then FFB or FB/TTW. I personally love Arcane spec for insain bursting dps. Nothing touches an arcane mages burst dps as far as a mage goes.
