cable modem suggestions

OK, I'm going to have Charter i-net for a long time to come, since FIOS will never be available in my area, and I don't want to continue to pay for the 5$/month rental charge.

Does anyone have an idea or suggestion on what to get ... like what's the most reasonably priced modem they've used?
I've found some on amazon (ie: Motorola Surfboard SB5101) for pretty cheap for like 50$. I'm aware it only supports up to DOCSIS 2.
I'm not going to be overpaying for faster speeds, if they even do become available in my area in the future.

Motorola SBG900. It has wi-fi and you can get one at best Buy for about $130 now. I've had one for ver a year and I love it. Very easy to setup.

Thanks for the reply. I was looking for a reasonably priced one

I don't need wifi built in. I already have a wifi router, and it's located directly next to my modem. So it's not necessary.

I use the Linksys CM100 and it is a great little modem!

I recommend the Motorola SB5101 as a reliable and stable modem in my opinion. You can get one at Newegg for about $38 + shipping. I have always used Motorola modems and they seem to last forever. Link:»www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···25122003

Welcome to the club Fios isn't available in my area either and I'm unlikely to see the Death star deploy Uverse at my location within my lifetime.
Mark up another Vote for the Moto. Have had three and all were better then my Toshiba and way way way better then my old bay networks cable modem. Of course anything is better then a bay networks modem on a Docsis network.

I've got both the linksys CM100 and the Scientific Atlanta DPC2100 Webstar that Charter sold me used for $30 at the local office. They sell them here for $30 used, $50 new, so don't pay more than that.

There's marginal if any speed difference in the two. The CM100 has more info on its pages about signal. The DPC2100 locks it all out once it hooks onto Charter. Also, Charter has to install any firmware updates (can't get them from linksys) so its probably a good idea to get one that is commonplace on their network or at least a modem that's a few revisions into a release and not a brand new design or you might run into problems that are fixed by a firmware update that you can't get.

I suggest you trade in your old modem to Charter for the Surfboard SB5101, i.e. you will have a new one. Then call Charter 2 weeks later and tell them you want to buy your current modem. Cost here to do that was about $25. I was told this at the Charter office when returning my new modem, having paid $50 for the same model at Wallymart.

Same model, you'll know it's working, and price is right. What's not to like?

I'm confused. I had a Motorola SB5101 for several years, and began having problems, which I noted in another thread. It was suggested I swap it out at the Charter office. I went to the office and they gave me a Scientific American DPC2100R2 modem manufactured in 2006.

Did I get screwed? I bought the Motorola from Charter.

My DL speed is not what it used to be, and I barely get any UL speed.

i second the the Motorola 5101, great, reliable, and if charter releases an update, u will get it since that's what they rent out.

Yes, all of the Motorola SB51XX models are excellent- they are solid and reliable, plus they tolerate marginal signal levels better than some other models.

Good price and I agree with your recommendation. I have a SB5101 that is going on it's 8th year now(if I'm not mistaken).

I can vouch for that model as well. Linksys CM100 is indeed a great little modem. No drops or glitches. Extremely stable.

I've got an SB5100 from 2004 and that thing is still going strong. It's about the only thing I like that motorola has made!
