There really is no comparison. Hands down the TivoHD boxes win. Just the user interface alone blows the Moto DVR away. You can hit the button 10 times on the Tivo and it actually goes with it where as on the insight it lags and then freezes and then goes to where it should.
The other features Tspencer mentioned such as the Amazon on demand, Netflix and the ability to stream movies from any PC even HD content is amazing.
You can also transfer shows from your DVR to your PC via the Tivo Desktop program or other third party programs.
HD works great on mine. I just wish insight wouldn't have gave me the run around with the 1 M-card being the same price as the same 2 x S-Cards. If you need more info please read up at www.tivocommunity.com there are tons of information there.
Along the space issues you can easily upgrade the internal hard drive or just buy the WD MyBook DVR expander in 1TB or 500GB storage size which should be plenty of space for any normal person. |

I dont know enough about the Insight box to compare basic features like season passes but the advantages to me are:
Netflix integration
Amazon HD movie downloads
Wishlist (by actor, director, genre, etc)
Network integration for transferring shows to and from the TiVo
3rd party program support (pyTivo, Streambaby, etc) extending functionality with streaming video/rss feeds/HD photos/games/etc
Less ads in the interface (there are some)
Online scheduling and viewing of recorded video lists
More stable/reliable (I suppose this is subjective)
You do lose onDemand capability but the Netflix/Amazon/PC Video capability more than make it up for me. The interface is very intuitive. It does have a smaller hard drive but it is expandable with either internal drives or an external TiVo drive.
I paid 199 for the box and 299 for lifetime service so if I keep it 5 years it works out to about $8 a month plus the $2 to insight for an m card. |

So this is totally unrelated but, I am curious to how the operation is of these boxes compared to the Insight DVR. I have the Insight one right now and it works great no problems, but I would like more storage space, it only has 160gig hard drive and that is not a lot of time. Do all of the HD channels work fine, what about the guide is that accurate? Basically I guess what I am asking is what are the downsides and upsides to each? Any help is appreciated. |

i assume you will have to do this every month unless they stated a 1.99 reoccurring credit. CSR's are quite sneaky. |

Have you received your latest bill yet with the charge of your M-Card? I finally got the phone CSR to acknowledge that they have M-Cards and had an appointment to come out and swap my two Single Stream cards to one M-card. The guy shows up and he says you do know the price is the same on one M-Card and Two S-cards. I asked if he was sure and he called the office and they verified. This is so frustrating. So many different answers from different people.
I think im just going to suck it up and just keep the two cards and pay $1.99 x 2. I didnt want the guy to mess with something that is working good and have the chance of it messing up. |

Thanks... I'll see if I get charged for two cards and if so I will make them either give me a M-Card or charge me for one since it was their mistake. |

I have TiVo HD in Lexington with a single M card. Never had to ask for anything but a cablecard for TiVo. Just 1.99 no extra. This was installed back in November. |

No that is one thing you can not do, but you do have access to netflix and amazon for movies and there are a lot of other internet based services |

A great add on drive, it is the only one supported by Tivo and they just started offering it in 1tb
I have the 500gb on mine and never had a problem, just plug in the eSATA cable and re boot the box and you are good to go

Thanks for the info. I assume another ploy for insight to make more money from us instead of using a single card lol.
The Tivo is working great so far. I am actually looking at upgrading the internal drive of my Tivo to a 1TB. It will cost around $80-90 but well worth it IMO. I am still reading the tivocommunity.com forums trying to figure what all you can do with the Tivo's since you can't do anything with the Motorola DVR. |

it does take two cable cards with Insight, They are Motorola cards, at 1.99 each. that was what i was told by the techs here in Columbus. after a week of them coming out every day and trying to get the box to work with only one card. after every thing was set up i have been really happy with the box. and i agree i think the picture is better. but the best thing of all. i could add an external storage unit i can now store up to 95 hrs HD. |

1 edit | Just had my new TivoHD setup from Insight in Louisville. To my suprise they brough two Single Stream cards to install. Is this normal? He said they only had one type of card. I was almost certain it had the M-Cards (Multi Stream Cards). Is this true or did they just grab the wrong cards? I think its $1.99 per card and if they are charging per card the Multistream card is what they should have brought. Anyone else on here have a Tivo or know about the cable cards?
Seems to work pretty good so far. It almost seems to output a better HD picture but it may just be my imagination. |
