Well, some VOIP SIP accounts are still free. Try »calltheworld.us/component/chrono···l_signup for a free SIP account and a free PSTN call. The SIP account is yours to keep. |

| reply to burgerwars Burgerwars,
Thanks for the tip. I am registered again. It actually might have some usefulness for me still, since I was one of those who frequently called other FWD members with ATAs registered with FWD. I also used it to call my old Sipura 3000 from out of the country so I could link into the POTS network, which I would like to to again.
However, I could also do the same with a free account with Callcentric or a number of other SIP providers. |

As the sharks converge and try to eat the mannequins, one shark says to another, "What is this, some kind of cruel joke?"

I used FWD for years, and have a a handful of numbers. I paid the $30 fee a few months back. In the past month all of my numbers have stopped registering, as have those of most people in this thread. I wonder why yours continue to work? Do the following change: Please update the SIP domain for connecting to FWD from fwd.pulver.com to sip.fwdi.net before March 31, 2009. NAT traversal gets addressed automatically, so there is no longer a need for fwdnat2.pulver.com or stun.fwdnet.net.
Once done you should be connected again, but the service is worthless. No voicemail, none of those numbers to access other VOIP services, toll free, etc. You're just able to dial other FWD users who's adapters are on and are by their phone to answer. You'll probably just get a lot of busy signals when dialing calls that are going nowhere. Incoming SIP does still work (change your domain also for services like IPKALL), but I've stopped using the service. |

I have my GizmoDID in asterisk. |

| reply to balaton No one likes losing money, but I don't think FWD was a scam. It was just a poorly run operation in the end.
DId you ever have a restaurant that you really liked that you knew was failing, but you went for one last meal? Whether it is to say goodbye to the staff, to preserve a memory, or as one last act of loyalty to small crew of people you knew and liked? That was where I was at the last year of FWD.
FWD got me into VOIP. My best friend lived in London and I lived in the US and we used to yack all the time. At the time, the best rate I could get to the UK was like $0.10 a minute and BT's rate for calling the US was even worse. For the price of two ATAs, two US phones (plus one 230v universal power supply), we could talk till we were blue in the face. We actually felt like it was illegal or something. A year or two later, I got my second ATA from Vonage and ultimately figured out a way to bridge calls between the two units.
I'm now running an Asterisk box and converted my office over to VOIP. I owe Jeff Pulver for that, enjoyed FWD, and wrote the $30 off to one last "meal" at an old memory. If the $30 bucks had given them the chance to pull their operation out of the grave, that would have been a very pleasant surprise. |

1 edit | reply to PX Eliezer said by PX Eliezer :Maybe this would meet your needs: Setup free accounts ("IP Freedom") with CallCentric (CC). You could also look at a free account from CallWithUs (CWU). Thanks. I will check them out. I don't need anything plush, no VM, no HD, no email alerts, etc. But connection to Sipbroker or other local NYC dial-in number is essential. The simplest would be to assign a Vitelity DID to one of the phones, but the problem is that these phone end-points used to call each other also. I wish Vitelity has a free in-network calling without touching POTS. Regarding myself getting scammed for $30: I am not very angry, this should be the biggest loss I even encounter. I'm usually a pretty cautious fellow, I just didn't expect it from Pulver and Co. Anyway, I am thankful for their service for the past decade, I have to say, it improved my quality of life and it was fun to be on the cutting edge 10 years ago. If they said that hey buddy we are short of cash, give us a few pennies for this service, I would probably have sent a case of beer to their office. I am not going to hang on this. |

Free voicemail, advanced call treatments, more.

1 edit | reply to balaton Maybe this would meet your needs:
Setup free accounts ("IP Freedom") with CallCentric (CC).
Their "IP Freedom" accounts can call each other (both inbound and outbound) for free either by the 1777xxxxxxx CC number or by direct SIP calling.
And CC has good peering with other networks as well:
»www.callcentric.com/faq/4/130 »www.callcentric.com/faq/4/150
You can get a free US DID number from IPKall and forward it to a CallCentric account. That's a freebie from IPKall and from CC.
If you do request a free DID number from IPKall, it will go MUCH faster if you use the email address from your own ISP instead of one from Yahoo or Hotmail or such.
---------------------------------
EDIT: You could also look at a free account from CallWithUs (CWU). Things are not as plush as with CallCentric, but one thing that's easier: With CallWithUs, you can set up a free main account, and set up several sub-accounts within it. Each subaccount has a 9-digit CWU number, and you could assign one to each phone so they could freely call to each other. And an IPKall DID can be forwarded for free to CWU. |

1 edit | reply to PX Eliezer I am using a few hardware phones. These phones have to be able to call each other without POTS. And one US dial-in number (from sipbroker or somethings else) is needed. Does voxalot would have more future than gizmo5?
I have used FWD for years to communicate with my family in Europe. One of the grandstream phones is with me and is being sent over in a couple of weeks. I have to configure it before it's sent out, because my mom is not into Voip configurations |

Sipphone is now Gizmo5, BTW.
And as mazilo said, their future may be as bright as a snowman in Georgia. |

| reply to balaton said by balaton :]Could you list some of them? Is Sipphone reliable? I started using SIPPhone almost the same time I started using FWD. Since FWD went to PWD, I completely switched to SIPPhone. The services on SIPPhone are as good as FWD (not PWD). However, it too has been showing its aging factors and perhaps will soon demise itself like FWD did. |
