Look communication buyout with bell & rogers

I am currently a look user in Burlington as I am in a rural area with no cable access. Look apparently has just been bought out and I was wondering what was going to happen to the current user base. Are we going to become bell or rogers customers now?

Does anyone have information on this? Also are there any other wireless services in the area. I play Warcraft and need a stable connection. Thank you for any feedback.

If it's anything like the other buyouts, they'll promise uninterrupted service, 6 months later they'll try to convince you to switch over to their own service then finally one day they'll send you a letter saying you must switch over your service and your current service will terminate on X date.

Uhhhh, OP said that he is in a rural area that doesn't even have cable access. I'll assume this means no DSL either. Though I guess they could force him onto "Portable Internet", which is likely far worse than whatever Look was offering.

Note that Look sold out to Inukshuk ... the Bell/Rogers wireless joint venture. So, it's likely that Look's wireless services will be absorbed into Bell/Rogers networks for portable internet.

Actually it's far better technology wise but Rogers does not plan for capacity.

Bell doesn't plan for capacity either!

Because it gets backhauled over the cellular network (designed for tens/hundreds of 9.6kbps users) instead of downlinked right away to decent termination?

Regardless, there's a silver lining in all of this for a WISP that wants to make a tidy profit with a surge of soon-to-be-disappointed customers.

""We are planning to have it converted to mobile spectrum," said Jan Innis, Rogers Communication's vice-president for communications. She could not say when it would be converted because the Canadian government's Industry department would have to convert the spectrum."

Ugh, more orphan spectrum.

Hopefully someone can keep us posted on how to fight it as much as possible

I'm not quite sure on the backhaul but I do believe it's sufficient and the capacity issues are the lack of hardware.

Wonder what will happen to Look's TV customers.

There are a lot of high rise condo,or appts which only have one line of cable. And this line is mainly located in the main floor or basement and therefore have Cable providers.

Majority of condos do not permit dish satellites. So if Bell bought Look, Its a way of getting these potential customers and others who have cable.I think they will offer the same programs as Bell, cause Look channels don't look so good.

I live on a high rise Condo and had LOOK, but due to poor channel offering, switched to Videotron

They install the Antenna on the roof, run a cable to the main room and you're connected like a cable provider.

My high-rise apartment building is in the same situation. We've only been allowed to subscribe to Videotron or LOOK, as satellite dishes are not permitted on the balcony (yet of course, the high-rise apartment right beside me has dishes, you'd think the owner would be as open minded).

Since I utterly detest Videotron (canceled a few years back) I called LOOK and they mentioned the option with the roof top antenna. Always considered them as an option, but I guess I have to scratch them off. Ditto for VDN, since I just learned they're now owned by Bell Canada, and lately I'm starting to detest Bell as much as Videotron. Actually I'm not even sure VDN is available in my area of Montreal.

I've been happy enough getting my TV using free-to-air signals with an indoor antenna but the analog shutdown in the States has kind of killed that option (I get most of my station from the states, or well, did up until recently). Trying to switch over to digital and avoid any of these companies...

Starchoice will do buildings, by putting 1 common dish on the roof.. My condo had it before switching to Rogers.. I don't care.. the condo pays for the cable.. not me.
