anon : "malamig!" is the one phrase I hear with frequency from them. They're not spring chickens, but they're in good health, so I would hope they'll adapt to our weather.
Mary Ann, otoh, lived in Taiwan for four years, so she was used to temps in the 50s as Taiwan's winters are cooler than January in the PI.
The PI isn't bad in Dec-Jan, but by the middle of February, I was broiling in Taguig. By May, it was unbearable in the typical housing, with corrugated metal roofs, making it like an oven inside. I reached up and touched the roof one morning around 8:30 am and it was already hot enough to inflict a 2nd degree burn on my fingertip! I had to do all my e-mail before 7 am, as the computer would start locking up once the room temp exceeding 100ºF, as it would do so regularly by 9am.
My experience is that EVERY Filipino complains "ma init" when they're IN the PI, and "malamig" when they're in the US. I know it took my wife about 3 years to get used to winters here. Now she's to the point where 62ºF that I keep the house at in January doesn't cause much complaint.
OTOH, with my advancing age, I'm beginning to loathe winter. I used to love snow and the cold never bothered me before, but the last ten years or so have seen me loving winters a lot less.
They bitched up a storm today because it was in the low forties this afternoon when I took them out to Atlantic Market for some shopping. BTW, Danbury's gotten awfully-crowded in the past fifty years since I've resided in the general area. I remember when Jenung's was on Main Street and you could drive downtown and find a parking space or make a left turn without waiting excessively for a break in traffic. Seems like the '80s screwed up Danbury's downtown planning, or the population tripled since then. Mary Ann refuses to drive down there, which is why I get drafted to be chauffer for these special trips.

signmeuptoo : It surprises me a lot to hear that they would complain about cool weather if they are from the PI. My Filipina lived in Japan for a Winter and loved it because it was such a relief after the heat of where she lives. It is hot hot hot in the PI.

I remember back when I was a young adult living in Danbury. I hated the cold and cool weather that was prevalent for so much of the year. But do you know what? Now I like it, having lived in the heat of the Southeast and Southwest. Some days in Tucson were deadly hot. Just sitting on a bench waiting for a bus could put burn marks on your ass, no kidding!

Tell them you are very surprised that they would complain about nice, fresh cool air after suffering the 90's and 100's of the PI, that may embarrass them a little.

My sweetie calls 78 degrees cold for where she lives.

Remind them about the problems in San Diego, gangs, illegals overrunning the system, wildfires, water shortage, desert wastelands, drug lords... San Diego has the weather of paradise, but it comes at a price.

Maybe they are just giving you a hard time?
--
Join Teams Helix and Discovery.
anon : It must be too much to ask for that nice blast of summer to last until AFTER my wife's parents arrive here from the Philippines. But no... on the day we drive to JFK to pick them up, it's in the 50s and raining. It's been in the 40s at night all week so far, and Wednesday, which was to be sunny, has been revised to showers, along with the rest of the week.
The inlaws are complaining it's too cold and they don't like Connecticut so far. Bad weather on their first week in CT makes for a bad first impression. They want to go back to San Diego CA where they spent a week last week. As for us, I've got outside work to do that is being held up due to the constant rain. Argghhh!!
