| Two year customer coming up on renewal... I've been a VT customer since a few days after the USS Sunrocket went down in a blaze of (un)glory. My two year term is coming up for renewal in July, and I'm not 100% sold on whether or not I should renew.
To be fair, I am still using my AC-211 from Sunrocket, which may be the cause of most of my problems, which, in the grand scheme of things, are not that bad, but have chipped away at the WAF lately.
Namely - the "hello, hello, HELLO" problem when picking up incoming calls. This is a minor annoyance, but is annoying nonetheless. Switching servers seems to fix it for a random period of time, but doesn't provide a permanent solution. This is my wife's biggest complaint, as it has plagued us for our entire VT run.
We've also had problems placing outgoing calls to other VT numbers where we don't hear anything, but the called party hears us. Tickets were submitted and the problem resolved, but it was another ding in the VT armor.
Like I said, these could be related to my AC-211. However, getting a VT supplied adapter for $50 isn't in the cards right now (I have infant twins on an Rx-only formula that costs about $300 a week). So, should I tough it out for another year, or move on? -- NukedGallery.net TheMolavis.com

Is that the handling charge? Aside from them charging if you don't return it at the end of service, I didn't think they charged for their ATA.

| Re: Two year customer coming up on renewal... They have a $9.95 shipping charge no way around that. They also have a $29.95 activation charge. Did you pay this already? Maybe they won't charge it again if you did.
If you don't return the device you get a $50 charge for it. It then becomes your property.
If they are going to bill you the $29.95 plus $9.95 shipping it would only cost you a few more bucks to just order a pap2t-na form Amazon also around $50.

| Re: Two year customer coming up on renewal... Hi,
The activation fee is only going to show up if someone is receiving equipment from us. If you signed up BYOD and have never contacted us to receive equipment, then you shouldn't ever see the 29.95 activation fee.
Also, we've worked with some other customers that also use the AC-211, and the multiple hello / incoming audio delay on pick up can sometimes be resolved by changing the adaptive jitter buffer setting in the device to half of the default (I believe the default is 100ms, but I can't remember off the top of my head). I can't guarantee this is going to be a fix for everyone that has the issue, but it's worked multiple times in the past for people with that box, and at the very least it's worth trying if this issue has been a continual annoyance.

| Re: Two year customer coming up on renewal... just for grins -put the 211 in front of your router to test the "hello" effect. Remember to reset the modem, set the rated upload limit (drl?) i forget the field but accessible through the 'welcome' ui -set to 10% above your advertised upload rate. Last do a soft reset. Takes 5 minutes & couldn't hurt. | |

1 edit | Just for grins, place the AC_211 in front of your router. Last month, found that my router was introducing WAF damaging latency, so placing in-front of the router has resolved all my issues. More recently I acquired a (NAized) SPA-2102NA which experienced the same router induced latency. I now have it in front of the router and have zero issues & WAF instantly restored. I placed my router WANIP into the ATA DMZ which makes the ATA invisible to my router allowing unfiltered internet traffic. I have great VoIP quality, no double NAT to impede p2p, all is good. I'm told that Firmware 5.2.5 required to allow SPA to manage memory properly in router mode using DMZ, all I know is it works.
btw:My AC-211 still works fine, just wanted more line#2 options offered by the SPA-2102NA. Time to sell my Innomedia as I don't need 3 ATAs.
edit: no, we paid no activation fee to VT during the weeks following SR collapse.

| Re: Two year customer coming up on renewal... Just saying a PAP2 may not resolve your issue. Switching providers also may not resolve your issues.
Call VT and have them look at your latency reading to the AC-211 -they measure it every 10 seconds. My AC-211 had better latency readings than the SPA when behind the router. THe AC-211 had 450ms and the SPA had up to 1500ms latency.

| Re: Two year customer coming up on renewal... said by Bill44130 :The reason I left VT was the cost recovery and other fees that they charged. They even attempted to charge these fees on prepaid customers before they even dreamed up the bullshXX fees. Gives a new meaning to "prepaid" , they lost a user here who racked up maybe 300 minutes a month. Luckily my new provider has been very reliable, and no monthly add ons | |

| I am in a similar situation. My 2 year deal is nearing the end of its term. That said, I am in the process of dropping VT (like a bad habit). Technically I am still in my free year, but I am so tired of the monthly fees I am being charged, even though I had pre-paid for 2 years. When I get around to it I am going to ship my VT supplied PAP2 back with a note requesting cancellation (their support agent said that would work just fine).
I bought my own PAP2 on Amazon.com for about $50. I am now on the pay per call plan with Callcentric and could not be an happier. Their service is stable and the bills are predictable. I have my eye on one of their dirt-cheap DIDs in my area.
Everyone's needs are different, but for me Callcentric's features, flexibility and pricing are a perfect fit. The only thing VT ever seemed to be able to do consistently was bill my card with a few $ in fees each month. -- Jordan

1 edit | Re: Two year customer coming up on renewal... said by jordantbro :ViaTalk's cancellation policy specifically requires you to cancel service via an on-line TroubleTicket. There are no cancellation penalties if you are within your free year ... but you may pay a penalty if you do not return the VT-supplied adapter. When you submit the TT, be sure to include your Credit Card (or payment method) info ... specifically the first 4 and last 2 numbers of your credit card (or something like that) in the same format as shown in your MyAccount webpage ... which as I recall when I cancelled the last of my many VT accounts was something like 1234*56. So I checked my legacy billing and found this:
2007-07-16 11:12 PM 228.95
I was a sunrocket refugee too, and did the buy one year, get one year free deal.
So does that mean I "own" my adapter? I really thought I did, but dont want to be penalized if I dont give it back.
EDIT: Found this:
Select An Adapter: Linksys 2-Port Adapter - FREE
So looks like I own mine, I think.....

We do not charge for adapters as long as you are an active ViaTalk client. In most cases the equipment is returned when someone cancels. Adapters can be purchased outright for $50 if you wish to own one. blacknoi, in your case, your adapter would need to be returned to us - or you can contact billing to purchase it for $50 if you'd like.

| Did you get a chance, as suggested, to call VT and have them look at the latency to your ATA?
When I first singed with VT I used my Innomedia ATA and had that Hello-Hello issue. Changed to the older AC-211 and that issue went away until my router induced 1000ms latency and the Hello-Hello returned. Have changed ATAs and routers since then and all is well.
