nComputing units work pretty well. We have some of the 'local only' and networked units. Agreed. Why not just pick up a 2-3 year old POS laptop off of Craigslist or something?

Honestly, it sounds like you're overengineering the solution here. You don't need a monitor/keyboard in every room when a laptop with a wireless card can follow you from room to room. I'm guessing all you're looking to do is surfing/mail (?) and you don't need a super-fast laptop for that.

This seems to be the lowest end Raritan switch that can do up to 8 "user" locations. (The link I gave above does not quite fit.)

Normal KVM switches are designed to take one monitor/keyboard/mouse and connect it to 6 computers, which is the opposite direction you want to go. I'm not sure electronic KVM switches can be run in reverse but there is a solution (assuming there isn't a device out there that already does this). Get some of the old rotary switch style KVM's. I don't know if they made them any larger than a 4 port variety but you can get a two port and connect it to two four port models and have essentially 8 ports available.
